Efficiency of occlusal splint therapy on orofacial muscle pain reduction: a systematic review

Sylwia Orzeszek et al.

Summary: This systematic review aims to determine the effectiveness of occlusal splints (OSs) in the treatment of orofacial myalgia and myofascial pain (MP). Thirteen studies were included in the review, and the results showed insufficient evidence to support the advantage of OS therapy over other interventions or no treatment. Further clinical studies with larger sample sizes and controls are needed to improve the quality of research in this area.

Accuracy of Surface Electromyography in the Diagnosis of Pain-Related Temporomandibular Disorders in Children with Awake Bruxism

Liliana Szyszka-Sommerfeld et al.

Summary: This study assessed masticatory muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity in children diagnosed with pain-related temporomandibular disorders (TMD-P) and awake bruxism (AB), as well as the diagnostic value of surface electromyography (sEMG) in diagnosing TMD-P in subjects with AB. The results showed statistically significant intergroup differences in the activity of the anterior temporal (TA) and masseter (MM) muscles at rest and during maximum voluntary clenching (MVC). sEMG demonstrated moderate accuracy in discriminating between TMD-P and non-TMD children.

Prevalence of Temporomandibular Disorder-Related Pain among Adults Seeking Dental Care: A Cross-Sectional Study

Qoot Alkhubaizi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of TMD-related pain in a sample population of dental school clinic patients. The results showed a high prevalence of TMD-related pain in the clinical sample population, with no difference between men and women. TMD-related pain cases differed significantly in terms of depression levels and body pain scores compared to non-cases.

Summary: The study on women with mTMD revealed that they exhibited abnormal recruitment of jaw-closing muscles during functional tasks, which may predispose to increased risk of further tissue injury.

Prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Ligia Figueiredo Valesan et al.

Summary: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD) among the general population. The overall prevalence of TMJD was approximately 31% for adults/elderly and 11% for children/adolescents, with the most prevalent TMJD being disc displacement with reduction (DDwR). Knowledge about the frequency of TMJD can encourage dentists to consider appropriate strategies for early and correct diagnosis and management.

Is jaw muscle activity impaired in adults with persistent temporomandibular disorders? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Alana Dinsdale et al.

Summary: Understanding the changes in jaw muscle activity in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is crucial for clinical management. Research shows that these changes are task-specific and muscle-specific, but insufficient data precludes comprehensive analysis, leaving it unclear whether these changes vary between TMD subgroups.

Temporomandibular Disorders: Current Concepts and Controversies in Diagnosis and Management

Dion Tik Shun Li et al.

Summary: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of orofacial pain conditions that are the most common non-dental pain complaint in the maxillofacial region. Due to the complexity of its etiology, diagnosis and management of TMD remain a challenge with lack of consensus. Clinical examination is considered crucial in the diagnosis of TMD, while imaging may serve as a valuable adjunct in selected cases.
