Summary: Women with SLE have lower levels of melatonin and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 compared to healthy women. However, these levels are not associated with laboratory diagnostic criteria parameters. Only the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 is correlated with leukocyte levels, and SLE disease activity is negatively correlated with the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3.

The article focuses on the reprogramming of latently infected B lymphocytes by EBV and the chronic presentation of viral antigens as a potential mechanism for MS development. The potential for therapies targeting EBV to treat MS is also discussed.

Dietary Sodium, Potassium, and Sodium to Potassium Ratio in Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Maria Correa-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dietary sodium, potassium, and sodium:potassium ratio and clinical disease activity parameters, damage accrual, and cardiovascular disease risk factors in a population of patients with SLE. The study found that higher dietary sodium and lower dietary potassium intakes were associated with an increased risk of higher hsCRP in SLE patients. Dietary sodium intake was significantly associated with anti-dsDNA and complement C4 level, while dietary potassium intake was associated with complement C3 level, suggesting that dietary sodium and potassium intakes might play a key role in markers related to disease activity in SLE patients.

Nutrition and immune system: from the Mediterranean diet to dietary supplementary through the microbiota

Luigi Barrea et al.

Summary: The interaction between nutrition and the immune system is complex, with specific micronutrients playing a key role in immune response and deficiency of essential nutrients impairing immunity. Individual's nutrition status, dietary intake, and nutraceutical supplementation can positively or negatively influence immune function, with some nutrients like vitamin D and zinc potentially modulating immune function. This review aims to update the relationship between nutrition, diet, and the immune system through gut microbiota, particularly focusing on the impact of the Mediterranean diet on immune function and speculating on the role of functional supplements.

Cellular immunology of relapsing multiple sclerosis: interactions, checks, and balances

Amit Bar-Or et al.

Summary: The pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis is being redefined by new insights from basic and translational studies, indicating involvement of various cell types and subsets in the inflammatory responses. Imbalanced interactions between T cells, myeloid cells, B cells, and their subpopulations play a crucial role in relapsing multiple sclerosis, with patient-specific contributors to these imbalances. Single-cell immune cell profiling techniques reveal functional heterogeneity and plasticity that could impact disease progression and treatment response. Clinical trials with different agents have helped to elucidate disease mechanisms, clarify immune therapy modes of action, and set the stage for new therapeutic strategies.
