Size-dependent toxicological effects of polystyrene microplastics in the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei using a histomorphology, microbiome, and metabolic approach

Ningjia Zhou et al.

Summary: Due to the wide application of plastic products, microplastic pollution in water has become a concern. This study investigated the toxicological effects of different sized polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on shrimp. It was found that smaller particles of PS-MPs had a higher ingestion and egestion effect, causing more damage to the guts and gills. The exposure to larger PS-MPs resulted in higher diversity of intestinal bacteria and enrichment of specific metabolic pathways. The study suggests that the particle size of microplastics should be considered when assessing their toxicity.

Assessment of acetylcholinesterase, catalase, and glutathione S-transferase as biomarkers for imidacloprid exposure in penaeid shrimp

Peter Butcherine et al.

Summary: Shrimp aquaculture is a valuable source of seafood that can be influenced by exposure to insecticides like imidacloprid. The study found that exposure to imidacloprid in shrimp increases the activity of biomarkers, with enzyme activity positively correlated to tissue imidacloprid accumulation. AChE activity in the abdominal tissue of shrimp was linked to imidacloprid concentration and neural tissue distribution, while CAT and GST activities indicated a generalized antioxidant stress response.

Dietary recombinant human lysozyme improves the growth, intestinal health, immunity and disease resistance of Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

Jing Wu et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the effects of dietary recombinant human lysozyme (RHL) on the growth, immune response, anti-oxidative activity, intestinal morphology, intestinal microflora, and disease resistance of shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. The results showed that dietary RHL supplementation significantly improved the growth performance, immune response, intestinal morphology, and disease resistance of shrimp, as well as positively modulated the intestinal microflora.

Propionigenium and Vibrio species identified as possible component causes of shrimp white feces syndrome (WFS) associated with the microsporidian Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei

Natthinee Munkongwongsiri et al.

Summary: White feces syndrome (WFS) in cultivated shrimp is characterized by white shrimp midguts and floating white fecal strings. One type called EHPWFS is associated with the microsporidian Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP). The intestinal microbiomes of EHPWFS shrimp were found to be less diverse and had higher abundance of bacteria from the genera Vibrio and Propionigenium.

Local barriers configure systemic communications between the host and microbiota

Qiuhe Lu et al.

Summary: The dynamic community of microbes (microbiota) plays a vital role in maintaining host health through communication and interaction. Although there have been advances in understanding the associations between microbiota and host processes and diseases, translating this knowledge into effective treatments has been challenging. More research is needed to uncover the key contributors to host health, the impact of strain differences, and the functions of the chemical products produced by the microbiota.

Yudong Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation of zymosan A on the growth performance, histological structure, digestive capacity, and microbiota of Litopenaeus vannamei. The results showed that an optimal level of zymosan-A could improve the growth and intestinal function in L. vannamei, which is valuable in aquaculture.

Combined toxic effects of thiamethoxam on intestinal flora, transcriptome and physiology of Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

Zhenqiang Fu et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence for the first time on the toxic effects of thiamethoxam on the growth, biochemistry, intestinal flora, and transcriptome in crustaceans. Thiamethoxam induced oxidative stress and decreased growth performance in shrimp, and led to an imbalance of the intestinal micro-ecosystem.

Polymeric antigen BLSOmp31 formulated with class B CpG-ODN in a nanostructure (BLSOmp31/CpG-ODN/Coa-ASC16) administered by parenteral or mucosal routes confers protection against Brucella ovis in Balb/c mice

Maria Celeste Moran et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that BLSOmp31/CpG-ODN/Coa-ASC16 is a safe and effective vaccine against B. ovis in mice, inducing a mixed immune response with high levels of IFN-γ and providing significant protection. Ocular instillation of the vaccine showed a similar degree of protection compared to subcutaneous injection, but induced lower levels of specific antibodies and cytokines in serum.

First insights into oxidative stress and theoretical environmental risk of Bronopol and Detarox® AP, two biocides claimed to be ecofriendly for a sustainable aquaculture

Gabriele Magara et al.

Summary: Bronopol and Detarox (R) AP are broad-spectrum antimicrobial biocides that have shown effectiveness against aquatic pathogens, but their toxicity on species and environmental risks are still under research. This study evaluated the acute and sublethal toxicity of these biocides on Sinanodonta woodiana, showing that both exert slight oxidative pressure on the freshwater bivalve. Theoretical environmental risk assessment suggested a lower risk with Detarox (R) AP compared to Bronopol, indicating greater ecological sustainability.
