Viral manipulation of host cell necroptosis and pyroptosis

Simon Verdonck et al.

Summary: Cell death, including necroptosis and pyroptosis, is an important part of the antiviral immune response, eliminating virus-infected cells and promoting immune development through the release of inflammatory mediators. Viruses employ evasion mechanisms to suppress these cell death pathways and antagonize host immunity.

Molecular typing and epidemiology profiles of human adenovirus infection among hospitalized patients with severe acute respiratory infection in Huzhou, China

Deshun Xu et al.

Summary: This study reveals the epidemiological and molecular characteristics of HAdV infections among hospitalized patients with SARI in Huzhou, China from January 2017 to December 2019. The prevalence of HAdV is related to age and season, and HAdV-B3 is the most common type.

Caspase-4/11 exacerbates disease severity in SARS-CoV-2 infection by promoting inflammation and immunothrombosis

Mostafa M. Eltobgy et al.

Summary: This study found that CASP4/11 is up-regulated in SARS-CoV-2 infections, and CASP4 expression correlates with the severity of infection. Mice lacking CASP11 showed less weight loss and lung pathology compared to wild-type mice, suggesting a protective effect. Additionally, mice lacking CASP1 showed reduced levels of inflammatory mediators and neutrophil functions. These findings indicate that CASP4/11 could be a promising drug target for the treatment and prevention of severe COVID-19.

Human adenovirus (HAdV) infection in children with acute respiratory tract infections in Guangzhou, China, 2010-2021: a molecular epidemiology study

Yi Chen et al.

Summary: This study describes the epidemiology and subtype shifting of human adenovirus (HAdV) infection among children with acute respiratory illness in Guangzhou, China. The results showed a clear seasonal distribution of HAdV, with increased cases and a shift in dominant subtype from HAdV-3 to HAdV-7 in 2018 and 2019. The study also found an increase in mortality rate among children with severe HAdV cases.

NLRP3 inflammasome activation and cell death

Yi Huang et al.

Summary: The NLRP3 inflammasome is a cytosolic multiprotein complex that responds to microbial infection, endogenous danger signals, and environmental stimuli. Its activation can induce pyroptosis and release of inflammatory cytokines, contributing to innate immune defense. However, aberrant activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome is associated with inflammatory diseases, and there is a close relationship between cell death pathways and NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

Summary: This study found that in HAdV infection, the expression of IL-10, M-CSF, MIG, HGF, IL-1 beta, IFN-gamma, and IL-2Ra is closely associated with disease severity, and can predict disease progression.
