Association of complement pathways with COVID-19 severity and outcomes

Kishor Devalaraja-Narashimha et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the levels of complement activation products and full-length proteins in hospitalized patients with COVID-19, and evaluated whether complement pathway markers are associated with outcomes. The results showed that all complement pathways were activated in hospitalized patients with COVID-19, and were correlated with multi-organ dysfunction and inflammatory injury. Specific complement pathway components were identified as prognostic biomarkers in COVID-19.

MBL2 polymorphism may be a protective factor of autoimmune thyroid disease susceptibility

Jianbin Xu et al.

Summary: This study confirms a genetic correlation between MBL2 gene polymorphisms and AITD susceptibility in the Chinese Han population. The MBL2 gene polymorphism may act as a protective factor for AITD, particularly for HT. These findings contribute to our understanding of the etiology of AITD and provide guidance for prevention and intervention strategies.

Vitamin D, infections and immunity

Aiten Ismailova et al.

Summary: Vitamin D plays a crucial role in regulating innate immune responses, particularly in combatting microbial threats. 1,25D promotes the expression of antimicrobial peptides and stimulates autophagy for pathogen control. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with higher rates of various diseases and increased susceptibility to viral infections.

Vitamins D2 and D3 Have Overlapping But Different Effects on the Human Immune System Revealed Through Analysis of the Blood Transcriptome

Louise R. Durrant et al.

Summary: Vitamin D plays a crucial role in maintaining bone health and calcium balance, and also has broad effects on cellular physiology and the immune system. This study examines the differences in gene expression following supplementation with vitamin D-2 and D-3, and suggests the existence of ethnic variations in the response.

Distinct Roles of Classical and Lectin Pathways of Complement in Preeclamptic Placentae

Beatrice Belmonte et al.

Summary: This study found that the expression of C1q in trophoblasts is defective in patients with pre-eclampsia, which affects the remodeling of maternal decidua blood vessels, leading to changes in placental function and structure. Additionally, the study also showed that the lectin pathway plays an important role in complement activation in pre-eclampsia.

Streptococcus pneumoniae interactions with the complement system

Eliza Gil et al.

Summary: Innate and adaptive immunity to Streptococcus pneumoniae infection is dependent on the complement system. The activation of the complement system by S. pneumoniae is crucial for host defense against infection. The complement system can be activated through different mechanisms, leading to the clearance of the pathogen and protection against invasive infections.

Sex hormones and immune system: Menopausal hormone therapy in the context of COVID-19 pandemic

Marina Averyanova et al.

Summary: This article explores the effects of sex hormones and menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) on the immune system in COVID-19 infections, discussing their regulatory mechanisms and impact on disease outcomes. The complex relationship between sex hormones and immune function, as well as the important role MHT plays in enhancing antiviral resistance and attenuating inflammatory responses, are highlighted.

The role of the complement system in primary membranous nephropathy: A narrative review in the era of new therapeutic targets

Benjamin Y. F. So et al.

Summary: Primary membranous nephropathy (MN) is a significant cause of nephrotic syndrome and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adults. The complement system plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of MN, and detection of complement activation products could serve as a promising tool for non-invasive disease monitoring and prognosis. However, further research is needed to address concerns regarding the risk of infection and high treatment costs associated with complement-directed therapies.

Regulation of the Immune System Development by Glucocorticoids and Sex Hormones

Summary: The neuro-endocrine system regulates immune system function and HSC differentiation through hormone release, affecting immune cell subsets. This regulation has long-term consequences during organism development, with the effects of GC exposure becoming evident in adulthood. In the context of HSCT, immune system development starts anew from donor HSCs.
