Regulated-biofilms enhance the permeate flux and quality of gravity-driven membrane (GDM) by in situ coagulation combined with activated alumina filtration

Peng Du et al.

Summary: Treating algae-contaminated surface water for drinking water production is a critical challenge. This study systematically assessed the impact of in situ coagulation, activated alumina filtration, and their combination on the performance of gravity-driven membrane during a 105-day operation. The results showed that the combination of coagulation and activated alumina filtration significantly enhanced membrane flux and reduced fouling, leading to improved water production.

IL-6 Prevents Lung Macrophage Death and Lung Inflammation Injury by Inhibiting GSDME- and GSDMD-Mediated Pyroptosis during Pneumococcal Pneumosepsis

Xuemei Gou et al.

Summary: This study reveals a novel mechanism for the development of pneumosepsis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and the critical protective role of IL-6. IL-6 prevents macrophage death and lung inflammation injury during pneumococcal pneumosepsis. These findings are important for the early identification and treatment of pneumococcal pneumosepsis.

The role of ROS in tumour development and progression

Eric C. Cheung et al.

Summary: Eukaryotic cells have complex systems to regulate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are deregulated in cancer cells. ROS also modulate the tumor environment and affect stromal cells supporting metabolism, blood supply, and immune responses. The response to ROS is complex and depends on multiple factors, including ROS characteristics and tumor characteristics. Understanding the complexity of ROS in cancers is key to developing ROS-targeting therapies for cancer treatment.

Early gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with worse pregnancy outcomes compared with GDM diagnosed at 24-28 weeks gestation despite early treatment

M. Mustafa et al.

Summary: The study revealed that women with early GDM (<24 weeks) and their offspring have a higher risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including pregnancy-induced hypertension, post-partum hemorrhage, and gestational diabetes. These findings emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and intervention to improve the quality of pregnancy outcomes.

Isoliquiritin ameliorates depression by suppressing NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis via miRNA-27a/SYK/NF-κB axis

Yuanjie Li et al.

Summary: The results showed that miRNA-27a expression was reduced in the serum of depressed patients and in animal models of depression. Isoliquiritin demonstrated significant antidepressant effects by decreasing NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis through the miRNA-27a/SYK/NF-kappa B axis.

Mitochondria as Signaling Organelles Control Mammalian Stem Cell Fate

Ram Prosad Chakrabarty et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial metabolism plays a crucial role in determining stem cell fate and function, beyond its traditional roles in ATP production and support for stem cell survival and growth. This review focuses on key conceptual ideas regarding how mitochondria control mammalian stem cell fate and function through mechanisms such as reactive oxygen species generation and TCA cycle metabolite production.

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) Risk for Declared Family History of Diabetes, in Combination with BMI Categories

Malgorzata Lewandowska

Summary: Some categories of family history of diabetes are independent risk factors for GDM-1 or GDM-2. Cumulative assessment of diabetes in parents and/or grandparents was not related to increased GDM risk, except for simultaneous diabetes in mother and grandmothers. In subgroups of different BMI categories, paternal diabetes was an independent risk factor for GDM in pregnant women with normal BMI, while the risk was higher in overweight and/or obese women with diabetes in both parents. The study also suggests a significant influence of paternal diabetes on GDM risk, even in lean pregnant women.

Nox2 impairs VEGF-A-induced angiogenesis in placenta via mitochondrial ROS-STAT3 pathway

Chengjun Hu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that Nox2 deficiency facilitates angiogenesis by inhibiting the VEGF-A and STAT3 pathway, and reducing VEGF-A expression through inducing ROS production in pigs' vascular endothelial cells. The findings suggest that Nox2 could be a potential therapeutic target for increasing VEGF-A expression to promote angiogenesis, and also serve as a prognostic indicator for fetus with IUGR.
