Genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 library screen identifies PCMT1 as a critical driver of ovarian cancer metastasis

Jingjing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study identified PCMT1 as a critical driver of resistance to detachment-induced apoptosis in ovarian cancer cells. PCMT1 enhanced cell migration, adhesion and spheroid formation through interaction with the ECM protein LAMB3. Treatment with an antibody against extracellular PCMT1 reduced cancer cell invasion and adhesion. PCMT1 was highly expressed in late-stage metastatic tumors, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic target in metastatic ovarian cancer.

Cancer statistics in China and United States, 2022: profiles, trends, and determinants

Changfa Xia et al.

Summary: The study compared the latest cancer profiles, trends, and determinants between China and the USA in 2022. China has a higher incidence of lung cancer, while the USA has more cases of breast cancer. Recent years have seen a significant decrease in lung and colorectal cancer rates in the USA, while liver cancer rates have slightly increased. In China, rates for stomach, liver, and esophageal cancer have decreased gradually, but colorectal cancer rates have increased for the whole population.

CXCL8 in Tumor Biology and Its Implications for Clinical Translation

Summary: Understanding the relationship between inflammatory and neoplastic processes in ovarian cancer, particularly chemokines and their receptors. Analyzing the levels of CXCL8 and its receptors CXCR1 and CXCR2 in serum and peritoneal fluid, and evaluating the association with tumor tissue and patient characteristics. The involvement of CXCL8 and its receptors in the pathogenesis of ovarian cancer indicates potential clinical applications.

Summary: Treatment of peritoneal metastasis in colorectal cancer faces challenges, with limited clinically meaningful benefits despite the trend towards improved survival with targeted drug combinations. Recent studies suggest oxaliplatin resistance as a major factor leading to the failure of HIPEC therapy to improve survival. Current treatment approaches are moving towards precision medicine based on individual biological information through high-throughput technologies.

Summary: Hypoxia plays a crucial role in the tumor microenvironment, affecting cancer processes. Changes in CXC chemokine expression induced by hypoxia have implications for angiogenesis, lymphangiogenesis, and recruitment of various cells to the tumor niche. Targeting the CXC chemokine system with drugs has potential in cancer therapy.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Summary: The study suggests that serum CXCL8 and CXCR2 concentrations are significantly higher in gastric cancer patients compared to healthy controls, with CXCL8 showing the highest diagnostic sensitivity among all tested proteins. Serum CXCL8 levels are indicated as a significant risk factor for gastric cancer occurrence and are a promising candidate for a biomarker in gastric cancer diagnosis.
