paper Development of biaromatic core-linked antimicrobial peptide mimics: Substituent position significantly affects antibacterial activity and hemolytic toxicity

Sen Li et al.

Summary: The development of bacterial resistance to conventional antibiotics has posed challenges in treating bacterial infections. In this study, a series of cationic compounds with different linkers were designed and synthesized, showing high antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The best compound, 3e, demonstrated excellent antibacterial activity and low hemolytic toxicity. Mechanism studies revealed its potential bactericidal mechanism and its ability to effectively reduce the load of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). These findings highlight the significance of divergent linkers in antimicrobial peptide mimetics for treating bacterial infections.

Genome-wide association analysis on host resistance against the rotten body disease in a naturally infected population of large yellow croaker Larimichthys crocea

Zhen Xi Zhang et al.

Summary: A genome-wide association study identified 14 SNPs correlated with disease resistance in large yellow croaker, with candidate genes involved in the NF-kappa B signaling pathway. This suggests a complex polygenic architecture for resistance against the parasite scuticociliate in large yellow croaker and provides a valuable foundation for future marker-assisted selection breeding.

Synergistic activity and immunomodulatory potential of levofloxacin and Synoeca-MP peptide against multi-resistant strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae

Jade Ormondes de Farias et al.

Summary: This study investigated the isolated and combined effect of peptides Synoeca-MP and IDR-1018 against multi-resistant clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae. Synoeca-MP exhibited better antimicrobial activity and displayed synergistic action when combined with levofloxacin. The combination of Synoeca-MP and levofloxacin showed effective antibacterial activity against multi-drug resistant strains of K. pneumoniae and had a potential modulatory effect on pro and anti-inflammatory mediators.

Synergistic antibacterial activity and mechanism of action of nisin/carvacrol combination against Staphylococcus aureus and their application in the infecting pasteurized milk

Qingxiang Li et al.

Summary: This study detected the synergistic antibacterial effect of nisin and carvacrol, showing that the combination had better antibacterial activity against S. aureus compared to individual use and reduced the dosage of antibacterials. The combination could completely kill S. aureus within 8 hours, inhibit biofilm formation, and increase intracellular antibacterial level. In addition, the combination treatment effectively inhibited microbial reproduction in pasteurized milk.

A Novel Antimicrobial Peptide Derived from Bony Fish IFN1 Exerts Potent Antimicrobial and Anti-Inflammatory Activity in Mammals

Xun Xiao et al.

Summary: The study identified a novel antimicrobial peptide (gcIFN-20) derived from grass carp interferon 1, which exhibits strong bactericidal and anti-inflammatory activities in mammals, and efficient therapeutic effects against clinical severe extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli and a mouse endotoxemia model. The mechanisms of its antimicrobial activity involve membrane disruption and cytoplasm overflow for Gram-positive bacteria, and membrane permeation and protein synthesis inhibition for Gram-negative bacteria. Its anti-inflammatory activity is achieved through aggregating and neutralizing lipopolysaccharide to attenuate its binding with receptors and facilitate phagocytosis.

Expression profile, subcellular localization of MARCH4 and transcriptome analysis of its potential regulatory signaling pathway in large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea)

Xin Tang et al.

Summary: This study reports the characteristics and signal pathway of MARCH4 in fish for the first time, revealing its significant upregulation in response to C. irritans infection. Subcellular localization analysis shows that LcMARCH4 primarily localizes to the cytoplasm and membrane. Comparative transcriptome analysis identifies potential regulatory genes and noncoding RNAs associated with MARCH4.

Mechanism of Antimicrobial Peptides: Antimicrobial, Anti-Inflammatory and Antibiofilm Activities

Ying Luo et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered a new generation of antibiotics with not only antimicrobial activity but also antibiofilm, immune-regulatory, and other activities. Research on the mechanism of action of AMPs can aid in their modification and development, with many studies focusing on this area. AMPs exhibit a dual mechanism of action and possess antifibroblast and anti-inflammatory properties, making them a promising therapeutic prospect.

Small proline-rich protein 2A is a gut bactericidal protein deployed during helminth infection

Zehan Hu et al.

Summary: SPRR2A is an intestinal antibacterial protein that selectively kills Gram-positive bacteria by disrupting their membranes. It shapes the composition of intestinal microbiota, restricts bacterial association with the intestinal surface, and protects against Listeria monocytogenes infection. Additionally, SPRR2A is induced by type 2 cytokines during helminth infection and protects against bacterial invasion of intestinal tissue during this process.
