Contaminants of emerging concerns in recycled water: Fate and risks in agroecosystems

Qingyang Shi et al.

Summary: Recycled water (RW) is recognized as a valuable source for alleviating water crisis. However, the use of RW for agricultural irrigation introduces contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) into the agroecosystem, raising concerns over their potential risks. Understanding the fate processes of CECs in the water-soil-plant continuum is crucial for the safe reuse of RW. Current studies show limited accumulation of CECs in irrigated soils and plants, indicating minimal health risks from RW-fed food crops. However, further research is needed to understand the offsite movement and plant accumulation of CECs under field conditions.

Characterization of Plant Accumulation of Pharmaceuticals from Soils with Their Concentration in Soil Pore Water

Yuanbo Li et al.

Summary: It is challenging to predict the uptake of pharmaceuticals by plants from soils due to the high variability of sorption/desorption and transformation processes. This study found that the concentration of pharmaceuticals in soil pore water is strongly correlated with their accumulation in radish, suggesting that pore water is the dominant fraction bioavailable to plant uptake. Root concentration factors based on soil pore water concentration showed more consistent results compared to those based on soil concentration, indicating that pore water-based factors are better for describing pharmaceutical accumulation in plants. The findings emphasize the importance of evaluating and including pharmaceuticals in soil pore water in models for plant uptake prediction.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the soil-plant system: Sorption, root uptake, and translocation

Weiping Mei et al.

Summary: PFASs are widely present in the environment and the soil-plant system plays a crucial role in their bioaccumulation. Research shows that the root concentration factor of PFASs is not related to hydrophobicity, while the translocation factor is negatively correlated with PFAS hydrophobicity. Further studies on different forms of PFASs and their interactions with plants are needed for a comprehensive understanding of their environmental fate in the soil-plant system.

Compartmentalization and Excretion of 2,4,6-Tribromophenol Sulfation and Glycosylation Conjugates in Rice Plants

Qing Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the most environmentally abundant bromophenol congener, 2,4,6-tribromophenol, can rapidly transform into sulfated and glycosylated conjugates in rice plants. The predominant sulfation and glycosylation conjugates are excreted into the hydroponic solution, but they exhibit different translocation and compartmentalization behaviors in Phase III metabolism, contributing to the reduction of 2,4,6-tribromophenol accumulation in rice plants.
