Investigations on the microstructure of drawn arc stud welds on structural steels by quantitative metallography

Oliver Braetz et al.

Summary: The drawn arc stud welding is widely used in steel construction. In this study, the metallurgy of low alloyed steel studs welded on different steel plates was analyzed, and it was found that the microstructures in the weld metal were very similar, while the heat-affected zone showed a typical quenching microstructure depending on the steel grade.

INVESTIGATION ON THE THERMAL BEHAVIOR OF FRICTION STUD WELDING OF DISSIMILAR ALUMINUM/MILD STEEL JOINTS

R. Tharmaraj et al.

Summary: The friction stud welding process, which converts mechanical energy to thermal energy at the interface of metals, is suitable for joining stud fasteners in various steel structure buildings and transportation equipment. However, there is currently no good thermal model for this process. In this study, a mathematical model is proposed and validated through experiments and numerical simulations, providing helpful insights for the design and manufacture of welding machines.

Stud welding system using an industrial robot for membrane walls

Xudong Ji et al.

Summary: This paper presents a robotic stud welding system based on a light section sensor for a membrane wall. Real-time measurement of pipe poses using the sensor and real-time feedback to calculate and compensate for pipe offsets are implemented. The practicality of this system is verified in the production of a membrane wall, showing a 36.9% increase in efficiency compared to manual welding.

Forming and weld grain growth behavior of arc stud welding driven by rotating magnetic field

Deku Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a method of arc hollow stud welding driven by external rotating magnetic field was proposed to address the issue of local non-fusion in medium and large diameter hollow stud welding. The rotating magnetic field was found to promote uniform burning of the arc and expansion of the molten pool, avoiding local unfused phenomenon and improving joint appearance. The rotating arc also stirred the molten pool, reducing undercooling and refining the grain size of the weld. The resulting magnetron stud welded joint exhibited high shear strength, impact toughness, and microhardness.
