Self-Supporting Bi-Sb Bimetallic Nanoleaf for Electrochemical Synthesis of Formate by Highly Selective CO2 Reduction

Summary: In this study, self-supporting bimetallic nanoleaves consisting of Bi and Sb components were fabricated on carbon paper using a facile electrodeposition method. The synergistic effect of Bi and Sb and the change of electronic structure led to high formate selectivity and excellent stability in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction. Furthermore, the bimetallic Bi-Sb catalyst exhibited outstanding stability for formate generation in flow cells, which is rarely reported in previous studies. This work offers new insights into the development of bimetallic self-supporting electrodes for CO2 reduction.

Summary: The key intermediates and transition states of the mechanisms of propionic acid decarbonylation and decarboxylation on icosahedral monometallic nanoclusters Pd-55 and bimetallic core-shell nanoparticles M-13@Pd-42 (M = Ni, Cu, Ag, Pt, Au) were simulated using density functional theory. The catalytic activity of Ag-13@Pd-42 and Au-13@Pd-42 particles was found to be higher than that of Pd-55 particle, attributed to the electronic and geometric effects. The weakening of Pd-Pd bonds in the shell of Ag-13@Pd-42 and Au-13@Pd-42 particles led to the formation of active sites and a decrease in activation energy.

Summary: The production of furanic biofuel 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF) from biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) was studied using a bimetallic NiCo/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. The catalyst with optimal Ni and Co content exhibited high activity, leading to a 73.4% yield of 2-MTHF. Multiple characterizations were performed to evaluate the catalyst properties, and their relationships with 2-MTHF yields were revealed. Additionally, the solvent effect on the conversion of 1,4-pentanediol to 2-MTHF was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations.
