Implicit/Explicit, BEM/FEM Coupled Scheme for Acoustic Waves with the Wave Equation in the Second Order Formulation

Lehel Banjai

Summary: In this work, the acoustic scattering of waves by bounded inhomogeneities in an unbounded homogeneous domain is investigated. A symmetric coupled system of time-domain boundary integral equations and the second order formulation of the wave equation is proposed. A fully discrete system is constructed by spatial discretization using boundary and finite element methods (BEM/FEM), leapfrog time-stepping in the interior, and convolution quadrature for the boundary integral equations. Stability and convergence analysis of the fully discrete system are provided under the CFL condition. The theoretical results are validated through numerical experiments in two dimensions.

Comparison of standard and stabilization free Virtual Elements on anisotropic elliptic problems

Stefano Berrone et al.

Summary: This study compares the performance of standard Virtual Element Methods (VEM) and stabilization free Enlarged Enhancement Virtual Element Methods ((EVEM)-V-2) on elliptic test problems characterized by anisotropies. The results show that the E2VEM methods, which allow for the avoidance of an arbitrary stabilizing part, can reduce the error magnitude on general polygonal meshes and aid in convergence.

Partially pivoted ACA based acceleration of the energetic BEM for time-domain acoustic and elastic waves exterior problems

A. Aimi et al.

Summary: In this paper, acoustic and elastic wave propagation problems in 2D unbounded domains are considered. A numerical method called Energetic BEM is proposed for their solution, but it suffers from high memory cost for large scale problems. To overcome this drawback, a fast technique based on the Adaptive Cross Approximation (ACA) is proposed, which reduces memory storage requirements and accelerates the computational solution time.

CVEM-BEM Coupling with Decoupled Orders for 2D Exterior Poisson Problems

Luca Desiderio et al.

Summary: In this study, a coupling method combining the Curved Virtual Element Method (CVEM) and the Boundary Element Method (BEM) is proposed to solve 2D exterior Dirichlet Poisson problems. The decoupled approximation orders allow for separating the contributions of CVEM and BEM to the error, achieving an accurate discrete solution by utilizing the high order flexibility of CVEM with a low order BEM. Numerical results validate the a priori estimates and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

ON THE COUPLING OF THE CURVED VIRTUAL ELEMENT METHOD WITH THE ONE-EQUATION BOUNDARY ELEMENT METHOD FOR 2D EXTERIOR HELMHOLTZ PROBLEMS\ast

Luca Desiderio et al.

Summary: In this paper, we discuss the solution of the Helmholtz equation with a nonconstant coefficient in unbounded domains. We propose a method that reduces the infinite domain to a bounded computational domain and combines the virtual element method and the boundary element method to solve the problem. Theoretical analysis and numerical tests show the effectiveness of this approach.

Error Estimates for FE-BE Coupling of Scattering of Waves in the Time Domain

Heiko Gimperlein et al.

Summary: This article discusses a coupled finite and boundary element method for an interface problem related to the acoustic wave equation. It examines the well-posedness, a priori and a posteriori error estimates for a symmetric space-time Galerkin discretization related to energy. Numerical experiments in three dimensions demonstrate the method's performance in model problems.

A Virtual Element Method coupled with a Boundary Integral Non Reflecting condition for 2D exterior Helmholtz problems

L. Desiderio et al.

Summary: A new numerical approach is presented for solving 2D exterior Helmholtz problems in unbounded domains by reducing the infinite region to a finite computational domain Omega with the introduction of an artificial boundary B and applying a Virtual Element Method (VEM) within Omega. The method achieves optimal convergence order by choosing the same approximation order for VEM and BI-NRBC discretization spaces, and its efficiency and accuracy are demonstrated through various numerical examples from literature and real life applications.

A fast boundary-finite element approach for estimating anchor losses in Micro-Electro-Mechanical System resonators

A. Aimi et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical method for estimating anchor energy losses in MEMS resonators, involving modeling of the resonator by Finite Elements and dissipation of radiated waves into the substrate by collocation Boundary Element Method. The approach allows for quick and accurate simulation of substrate response in real time, with minimal computational time, making it suitable for real-life engineering applications and future investigations.
