Characteristics of Solidified Carbon Dioxide and Perspectives for Its Sustainable Application in Sewage Sludge Management

Joanna Kazimierowicz et al.

Summary: Appropriate management is necessary to mitigate the environmental impacts of wastewater sludge. One lesser-known technology concerns the use of solidified CO2 for dewatering, sanitization, and digestion improvement. Solidified CO2 can effectively condition sludge and contribute to the improvement of digestion processes, while also reducing atmospheric CO2 emissions.

Exploring the carbon capture and sequestration performance of biochar-artificial aggregate using a new method

Jun Liu et al.

Summary: To achieve carbon neutrality, new carbon sequestration channels are necessary. This study combines biochar with cold-bonded artificial lightweight coarse aggregate (ALCA) made from municipal solid household waste incineration bottom ash (MSWIBA) to sequester carbon. The synergistic carbon sequestration ability of biochar-ALCAs was quantified, and it was found that they could sequester up to 30.58-33.06 kg/ton of carbon. The physical and mechanical properties of biochar-ALCAs were significantly improved after carbon sequestration. This research contributes to the development of recyclable cement-type composites for carbon capture in the natural environment.

Effect of Pharmaceutical Sludge Pre-Treatment with Fenton/Fenton-like Reagents on Toxicity and Anaerobic Digestion Efficiency

Joanna Kazimierowicz et al.

Summary: The feasibility of applying Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) harnessing Fenton's and Fenton-like reaction to pharmaceutical sewage sludge (PSS) pre-treatment prior to anaerobic digestion (AD) was investigated. The results showed that the use of AOP significantly reduced PSS toxicity and improved methane fermentation efficiency. Therefore, research has proven that AOP can be used to improve the efficiency of AD of PSS.

Hydrothermal pretreatment of sewage sludge for enhanced anaerobic digestion: Resource transformation and energy balance

Xiaoguang Liu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of hydrothermal pretreatment (HTP) on anaerobic digestion (AD) of sewage sludge at different temperatures. HTP increased organic matter destruction and methane production, but high temperature HTP led to increased propionate levels and lower methane production. The bacterial communities in the digesters were significantly affected by HTP, while the archaeal communities showed minor changes. The highest net energy gain was observed in the control group, and a heat recovery greater than 85% is needed to achieve a similar net energy gain with HTP.

Summary: The study aimed to optimize methane fermentation of food waste by identifying the best composition of substrates mixture and technical parameters of anaerobic digestion. Mesophilic conditions yielded higher biogas production compared to thermophilic conditions due to the presence of higher VFAs concentration. Above a certain OLR threshold, methane fermentation was inhibited.

Shiyi Qin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the microbial profiling of anaerobic digestion during the processing of sewage sludge and food waste to volatile fatty acids in an immersed membrane bioreactor with different organic loading rates. Firmicutes and Actinobacteria were dominant at specific OLR levels, while Clostridium and Lactobacillus genera were responsible for higher yields of acetate, butyrate, caproate, and lactate. The bacterial community was dominated by the Firmicutes phylum and Clostridium sp. W14A species, indicating a lower population of acetogenic bacteria associated with greater VFAs generation.
