Psychological profile and α-amylase levels in oral lichen planus patients: A case-control preliminary study

Juliana Araujo da Silva Simoura et al.

Summary: This study investigated the psychological and salivary profiles associated with oral lichen planus, finding a correlation between anxiety, depression, stress, and the disease. The study also identified higher concentrations of salivary alpha-amylase post-awakening in individuals with oral lichen planus, suggesting the potential of alpha-amylase as a biomarker for future studies.

Langerhans cells in the skin and oral mucosa: Brothers in arms?

Anna Brand et al.

Summary: The skin and oral mucosa are constantly exposed to pathogens and foreign antigens, and both contain Langerhans cells (LC) that can promote both tolerogenic and inflammatory immune responses. While skin LC have been extensively studied, less is known about oral mucosal LC. This review summarizes the current knowledge on LC subsets in the skin compared to the oral mucosa, including their development, homeostasis, function, and interaction with the microbiota. It also updates recent advances on the role of LC in inflammatory skin and oral mucosal diseases.

Targeting B cells and plasma cells in autoimmune diseases: From established treatments to novel therapeutic approaches

Ana Merino-Vico et al.

Summary: Autoimmune diseases are characterized by inflammation and tissue damage caused by the immune system recognizing self-antigens. B cells play a critical role in autoimmunity and have been identified as therapeutic targets. This review article provides an overview of novel strategies to target B cells in autoimmune diseases, with a focus on rheumatic diseases.

Origin of langerin (CD207)-expressing antigen presenting cells in the normal oral mucosa and in oral lichen planus lesions

Maren B. Solhaug et al.

Summary: The number of langerin-expressing antigen-presenting cells is higher in oral lichen planus than in normal oral mucosa, possibly due to recruited dendritic cell precursors. Antigen-presenting cells in oral lichen planus exhibit a phenotype compatible with tissue-elicited cDC2.

Summary: This observational study analyzed the inflammatory cell infiltrates in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral leukoplakia (LPL). The study found that there was a significant increase in the number of CD3(+) cells and CD20(+) cells in OLP, indicating a stronger immune activation involving T cells and B cells compared to LPL.

Functional Implications of Epstein-Barr Virus Lytic Genes in Carcinogenesis

Lee Fah Yap et al.

Summary: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a human tumor virus that plays a critical role in the development of various cancers. It has two life cycles, latent and lytic, with latent genes driving disease development and lytic genes responsible for viral transmission. Recent studies have shown that EBV lytic genes are expressed in tumor tissues and cell lines, suggesting their significant involvement in tumorigenesis.

Role of B cells as antigen presenting cells

Ichwaku Rastogi et al.

Summary: This review discusses the role and function of B cells in the humoral immune system, as well as their ability to act as antigen presenting cells. B cells have been shown to activate antigen-specific T cells and have regulatory and cytotoxic effects. The importance of B cells within the tumor microenvironment is increasingly recognized, and B cells are being evaluated as cellular therapies.

Summary: This review evaluated the correlation between viral infections (HPV, EBV, HSV-1, CMV) other than HCV and oral lichen planus. The results showed inconclusive evidence regarding the involvement of these viruses in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. Summary: Thyroid disorders, cancer, type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, sedatives, and vitamin D supplementation were found to be associated with OLP. Summary: This study found significantly higher levels of CD207+cells in oral lichenoid lesions (OLL) compared to oral lichen planus (OLP), with a prevailing CD207(high) expression pattern observed in OLP. Additionally, there were significant differences in the expression of CD1a and CD207 between intraepithelial and subepithelial areas, and significant correlations were observed between the expression of CD1a+ and CD207+ cells in the pathogenesis of OLP and OLL.

Epstein-Barr Virus and Systemic Autoimmune Diseases

Summary: Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is a highly successful human herpes virus that infects essentially all humans at some point in their lives. EBV primarily spreads through saliva and can lead to infectious mononucleosis. The infection results in an immune response and production of antibodies, which can cause chronic relapsing/reactivating infections.
