Coastal uses and contaminant spread in the desert coastal region of Atacama

Estefania Bonnail et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the coastal zone uses of the Atacama region in Chile in relation to population settlements and economic activities. Most of the coastal edge was used for fishing and aquaculture, while a significant portion was designated for conservation and protected areas. However, conflicts due to shared uses were identified, and a lack of research on emerging contaminants in the area was highlighted despite significant human settlement and economic development.

Integrative Assessment of Sediments Affected by CO2 Enrichment: A Case Study in the Bay of Santos-SP, Brazil

Marina Cunha Passarelli et al.

Summary: An integrated approach was used to assess the environmental risks associated with CO2 enrichment-induced acidification in coastal sediments from Santos, Brazil. The study found significant chronic and acute toxic effects of acidification on marine organisms, as well as alterations in macro-benthic community structure. Statistical analyses indicated a correlation between toxic effects and metal bioavailability with acidification, highlighting the extreme toxicity of a pH of 6.0 for marine life.

Unravelling Lessonia trabeculata management in coastal areas of the Atacama region of northern Chile through a DPSIR approach: Insights for sustainable plans

Leonardo Campos et al.

Summary: Subtidal Lessonia trabeculata in northern Chile is a primary kelp resource that has been subjected to fishing dynamics influenced by price fluctuations and economic indicators, leading to over-extraction and pressure on local biota. Despite the implementation of management plans and annual quotas, the extraction of resources continues to increase, highlighting the need for further research and specific focus on the management of this species.

De-politicising seawater desalination: Environmental Impact Assessments in the Atacama mining Region, Chile

Cecilia Campero et al.

Summary: This paper examines how Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Declarations of Environmental Impact (DIAs) fit into addressing the socio-environmental implications of desalination. Despite their intention to minimize negative impacts and address them before construction, they are sometimes used in ways that lead to negative socio-environmental outcomes.
