Sagging damage characteristics of hull girder with trapezoidal cross- section subjected to near-field underwater explosion

Hai-tao Li et al.

Summary: A trapezoidal hull girder was designed, manufactured, and tested to investigate the damage characteristics and failure modes of a warship in an underwater non-contact near-field explosion. Results showed that the girder mainly exhibited sagging damage, with the largest deformation observed when the explosion occurred directly below the midspan of the girder. The ratio of stand-off to maximum bubble radius was found to affect the type and magnitude of girder deformation, with sagging deformation increasing at higher ratios and decreasing at lower ratios. The low-pressure region of the flow field formed by bubble pulsation and the resonant coupling between the girder and the bubble were identified as the main causes of damage to the overall girder structure.

Comparative experimental study into the explosive blast response of sandwich structures used in naval ships

A. Gargano et al.

Summary: Naval ships are at risk from explosive blasts and therefore require sandwich composite structures that can resist extreme deformation and damage. An experimental study compared the blast response of sandwich composite panels with different core materials and laminate facesheets. The study found that fiberglass laminate facesheets were more resistant to blast-induced damage than carbon fiber facesheets, and balsa wood was more extensively damaged compared to polymer foam.

Computational analysis of bubble-structure interactions in near-field underwater explosion

Wentao Ma et al.

Summary: The response of underwater structures to a near-field explosion is investigated in this paper using a two-dimensional model problem. A computational framework that couples a finite volume compressible fluid dynamics solver with a finite element structural dynamics solver is employed. Three different collapse modes are discovered and their causes are visualized through the analysis of fluid pressure and velocity fields, bubble dynamics, and structural deformation. The study also reveals the significant effect of the second pressure pulse resulting from the contraction of the explosion bubble on the collapse of the structure.

Experimental investigations on small-and full-scale ship models with polyurea coatings subjected to underwater explosion

Jian Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of polyurea coatings on the blast resistance of hulls subjected to underwater explosion through two types of scale tests. The small-scale model tests show that polyurea coatings have better blast resistance when applied to the front face of the ship. However, the results of the full-scale ship test differ from those of the small-scale tests.

Study on the energy dissipation mechanism of the pyramidal lattice sandwich panel subjected to underwater explosion

Zhenhua Zhang et al.

Summary: The energy dissipation mechanism of a pyramidal lattice sandwich panel subjected to underwater explosion is studied in this paper. Through experiments and simulations, the deformation mode of the panel and the deformation process of each component are revealed. Theoretical solutions are also presented. The results show that the pyramidal lattice sandwich panel can effectively control the fluid-structure coupling effect and attenuate the impulse transmitted to the model.

Underwater explosive bubble interaction with an adjacent submerged structure

Carlos Javier et al.

Summary: An experimental and computational investigation was conducted to study the interaction between bubbles generated by an underwater explosive and a nearby steel plate structure. The results show that the UNDEX standoff distance greatly influences the gas bubble's shape, migration speed, bubble jetting behavior, and loading into its adjacent structure. Additionally, the impulse generated by the collapse of the UNDEX gas bubble is larger than that generated by the shock wave impact on the plate surface.

Experimental and numerical investigation on the dynamic response of a simplified open floating slender structure subjected to underwater explosion bubble

N. Gan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dynamic behaviors of warships using a simplified open floating slender structure subjected to underwater explosions. The results show that deformation and damage of the structure are mainly induced by bubbles, while damage caused by shock waves is less pronounced. Different detonation distances and charge weights lead to various deformation modes, with a plastic hinge generated in the structure under certain conditions.

A simplified theoretical model of the whipping response of a hull girder subjected to underwater explosion considering the damping effect

Haitao Li et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a simplified hull girder model to predict the whipping response of a vessel under an underwater explosion accurately and quickly. Structural and fluid damping effects on vessel dynamics are analyzed, and a theoretical model for elastic and elastic-plastic responses is verified using experimental data. Damping suppresses the whipping response and affects the plastic hinge rotation angle of the girder.

Evaluation of effectiveness of polymer coatings in reducing blast-induced deformation of steel plates

Damith Mohotti et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of Polyurea coating on the blast-induced response in steel plates, finding that back face coating reduces residual deformation and eliminates melting of the Polyurea layer, while front-face coating can be used to provide additional standoff distance.

LARGE DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR OF THIN MILD STEEL RECTANGULAR PLATES SUBJECTED TO UNDERWATER EXPLOSION LOADING UNDER AIR AND WATER BACKED CONDITIONS

C. Suresh et al.

Summary: Military marine vehicles are vulnerable to underwater explosions, causing large deformation, tearing and rupture. This study investigates the localized deformation of thin mild steel plates subjected to underwater explosions, showing reduced central permanent deformation in water backed conditions compared to air backed conditions. Experimental results are compared with numerical simulations to analyze the behavior under different conditions.
