Centrifuge modeling of multi-row stabilizing piles reinforced reservoir landslide with different row spacings

Chenyang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the deformation and failure characteristics of multi-row stabilizing piles reinforced reservoir landslides through two centrifuge tests. The results show that the lowering of the reservoir water level induces increased bending moments at the lower section of the piles, leading to bending deformation and failure near the sliding zone. A smaller row spacing enhances the mechanical connection between the piles and improves the overall reinforcement capacity, while a larger row spacing weakens the connection and results in independent mechanical states for each row of piles.

Numerical investigations on mechanical properties of bio-inspired 3D printed geometries using multi-jet fusion process

Ramesh Chand et al.

Summary: The study aims to find the best geometries (cylindrical, enamel, and honeycomb) based on mechanical properties. Experimental tests and numerical modeling were conducted on parts fabricated with multi-jet printing process, and the optimal geometry and the influence of wall thickness on mechanical properties were obtained. The results showed that cylindrical geometry is preferred for fully functional parts, followed by enamel and honeycomb.

Experimental research on consolidation creep characteristics and microstructure evolution of soft soil

Jie Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, one-dimensional consolidation creep tests and SEM tests were conducted to investigate the macroscopic mechanical properties and microscopic evolution mechanism of Nansha soft soil during consolidation creep. The results show that the creep process of Nansha soft soil can be divided into three phases: initial instantaneous deformation phase, attenuation creep phase, and stable creep phase. The creep deformation increases with the consolidation creep stress. During the creep process, the distance between particles decreases, particles are gradually broken, the quantity of particles and pores increases but their volume decreases, and the shape of particles and pores changes. The consolidation creep stress determines the particles distance and the degree of fragmentation, and this trend is more pronounced with the increase of the consolidation creep stress.

Potential failure patterns of a large landslide complex in the Three Gorges Reservoir area

Y. Dong et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the potential sliding process of the Huangtupo landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir area and determines the shear strengths of the soils in the sliding zone through laboratory experiments. The study reveals that retrogressive landslides are more harmful than thrust-type landslides in multi-stage landslide events, and the consequences are more severe when sliding masses share common sliding surfaces.

Multiple-GPU parallelization of three-dimensional material point method based on single-root complex

Youkou Dong et al.

Summary: The material point method (MPM) is an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method with intrinsic advantages in simulation of large deformation problems. This paper proposes a new multiple-GPU parallel strategy based on a single-root complex architecture, which achieves computation acceleration through peer-to-peer communication and domain decomposition.

Disturbed State Concept-Based Model for the Uniaxial Strain-Softening Behavior of Fiber-Reinforced Soil

Zhipeng Wu et al.

Summary: A uniaxial strain-softening constitutive model for fiber-reinforced soils is developed based on the disturbed state concept. The model considers the response in the intact state and fully adjusted state, and the apparent stress-strain curve is derived from a weighted average of these two responses. The model demonstrates that fiber content has a greater influence on reinforcement effect than fiber length. Evaluation of test data shows that the model predicts stress-strain curves in good agreement with experimental results, and accurately describes the fiber reinforcement effect.

Integrated ecosystem management and regulation strategies in the South China Sea

Liming Zhou et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the coupling degree between the ecosystem and environmental security in the South China Sea Gulf, and proposes integrated management and regulation strategies for the Gulf ecosystem. By analyzing the correlation between the safety culture in the Gulf and the ecological environment safety, as well as the variation of the rural ecosystem service value, a grey correlation degree model is constructed for ecological environment safety. The study also identifies the regulation strategy for the South China Sea Gulf ecosystem through the analysis of the coupling time sequence law of ecological environment security.

Turbulence Processes Within Turbidity Currents

Mathew G. Wells et al.

Summary: Turbidity currents are density-driven flows that transport vast quantities of particulate material across lake and ocean floors, sometimes generated by slope failure. The dynamics of turbidity currents, including internal turbulent mixing and flow around channel bends, are influenced by internal density and velocity structure, as well as the Coriolis force. Understanding these processes is crucial for comprehending some of the largest sedimentary structures on Earth's surface.

An innovative echo detection system with STM32 gated and PMT adjustable gain for airborne LiDAR

Guoqing Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper designs a LiDAR echo signal detection timing control system to improve accuracy of experimental results by using an STM32 controller as a gated signal generator to adjust the gating trigger signal, avoid overly strong surface echo signals, and amplify weak underwater signals with PMT adjustable voltage control gain technology. The system reduces power consumption and load capacity by using STM32 instead of a traditional signal generator. Experimentally, the system can amplify underwater signals by at least 6-fold while avoiding the effect of the surface echo signal.
