Weld formation, arc behavior, and droplet transfer in narrow-gap laser-arc hybrid welding of titanium alloy

Jie Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the weld formation, arc behavior, and droplet transfer in narrow-gap laser-arc hybrid welding of 16 mm-thick TC4 titanium alloy. The penetration depth was influenced by laser power and welding speed, while filler metal height and sidewall penetration were proportional to wire feeding speed. Weld cross-sectional morphologies were classified into inclined, concave, and convex shapes. The optimization of laser power and wire feeding speed improved arc stability.

Analysis of metal transfer and weld forming characteristics in triple-wire gas indirect arc welding

Liming Liu et al.

Summary: Triple-wire gas indirect arc welding (TW-GIA) has the advantages of low heat input and high deposition rate. This study explores the metal transfer mode of TW-GIA using high-speed camera systems and electrical signal acquisition sensors. Four different metal transfer modes were identified, and their corresponding process parameter ranges were summarized. The SPT and SST modes were found to produce desirable weld seam due to their stable arc and uniform metal transfer process. TW-GIA also offers benefits such as small welding deformation, narrow heat-affected zone, and grain refinement.

Effect of molten pool behaviors on welding defects in tandem NG-GMAW based on CFD simulation

Siyuan Han et al.

Summary: The relationship between molten pool behaviors and weld bead formation under different wire feed rates and welding speeds was studied using a computational fluid dynamics model. The results showed that low wire feed rates or high welding speeds can result in lack-of-fusion or finger penetration defects. The simulation results indicated that vortex flows on the sidewalls enhance the transverse transmission of fluid and heat, leading to the formation of a concave weld bead. Additionally, low wire feed rates or high welding speeds weaken the transverse flow in the molten pool, hindering the melting of groove sidewalls and the spreading of liquid metal.

Porosity suppressing and grain refining of narrow-gap rotating laser-MIG hybrid welding of 5A06 aluminum alloy

Xiaoyi Yang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that an appropriate rotating laser can effectively reduce porosity, improve joint quality, and enhance sidewall fusion in NG-RLMHW of 5A06 aluminum alloy. The stirring effect of the rotating laser results in smaller grain size and more uniform temperature gradient in the molten pool, promoting the morphology transformation in the weld metal.
