Xiaolei Deng et al.

Summary: The Hybrid Cellular Automata Method (HCAM) has been successfully used in solving structural topology optimization problems. This paper introduces three-dimensional non-cube cells and Finite Element Method (FEM) to extend HCAM, allowing for better adaptability to complex geometric shapes and obtaining improved structure configurations. The study demonstrates that the proposed method effectively removes redundant materials and meets original requirements, providing a reference for intelligent design of other products.

Topology optimization of multi-material structures with explicitly graded interfaces

Baoshou Liu et al.

Summary: The rapid development of additive manufacturing provides new opportunities for fabricating multi-material structures. However, the graded-interface assumption between different materials often poses challenges in topology optimization. This study proposes a new element-based topology optimization algorithm that explicitly considers interface types and allows precise control of interface width. Numerical examples demonstrate that the optimized designs using this method achieve lower compliance compared to traditional multi-material designs.

A Hybrid Level Set Method for the Topology Optimization of Functionally Graded Structures

Junjian Fu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a hybrid level set method (HLSM) for designing novelty functionally graded structures (FGSs) with complex macroscopic graded patterns. The HLSF is used to model the macro unit cells parametrically, and the C-0 continuity is guaranteed by interpolating the local design variables using the global design variables. A topology optimization model based on HLSM is established to maximize structural stiffness and solved by the optimality criteria algorithm. Numerical examples and bending tests demonstrate the effectiveness of HLSM for designing FGSs.

Explicit multi-material topology optimization embedded with variable-size movable holes using moving morphable bars

Xuan Wang et al.

Summary: An explicit topology optimization method based on the MMB method is proposed for a multi-material continuum structure with multiple variable-size movable holes. The method utilizes multiple sets of morphable bars and level-set functions to describe the structural topology and geometrical shapes of the holes, projecting them onto density fields to avoid remeshing. The effectiveness of the proposed formulation is demonstrated through numerical examples, showing a reduction in design variables compared to existing optimization frameworks with embedded movable holes.

Topology optimization for structure with multi-gradient materials

Yihao Dong et al.

Summary: Functionally gradient materials (FGM) are widely present in biological structures, providing essential support and potential protection. This paper extends topology optimization to multi-gradient structures for biological bone modeling, defining density gradients at different levels and using non-monotone filter functions and Heaviside projection functions to separate layers. A robust control method with geometric constraints is applied to avoid local singularity, demonstrating the validity of the algorithm with benchmark problems.
