Improvement of cavitation erosion resistance of structural metals by alternating magnetic field treatment

Anatolii Babutskyi et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of cavitation erosion tests on EN8 steel, nickel-aluminium bronze (NAB), 70/30 brass, and aluminium alloy AA2014-T6 after alternating magnetic field (AMF) treatment. The tests showed a significant decrease in mass loss for all samples treated with AMF. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the characteristics of the eroded samples, while microhardness measurements indicated an increase in surface hardness after AFM treatment. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy provided evidence of compressive residual stresses, dislocation movement, and precipitation formation in different alloys. The study proposes and discusses mechanisms explaining the increase in cavitation erosion resistance due to the treatment.

Cavitation erosion resistance enhancement of the surface modified 2024T351 Al alloy by ultrasonic shot peening

Chaorun Si et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel surface strengthening method called ultrasonic shot peening (USP) was proposed to improve cavitation erosion resistance. The 2024T351 aluminium alloy surface layer was modified through USP treatment, resulting in refined grains size, increased microhardness, and residual compressive stress. The cavitation erosion behavior of the processed alloy was investigated, and the results showed that the USP-ed sample experienced significantly reduced cavitation weight loss due to the combined effect of surface hardening and residual compressive stress. Furthermore, the study revealed that increased surface roughness during shot peening could lower cavitation resistance properties, but this weakening could be avoided through surface finishing. Overall, USP is a promising physical strengthening method that can greatly enhance the cavitation erosion resistance of metals.

Enhancing the cavitation erosion resistance of AISI 420-type stainless steel with quenching and partitioning

Lassi Raami et al.

Summary: This study investigates the cavitation erosion resistance of AISI 420-type stainless steel after quenching and partitioning (Q&P) heat treatment. Q&P-samples were prepared with different heat treatment parameters and their initial properties were examined. The results show that the cavitation erosion resistance of the stainless steel can be greatly enhanced with Q&P due to its high initial hardness and retained austenite fraction. The retained austenite absorbs cavitation bubble collapse energy by transforming into strain induced martensite, increasing the hardness of the steel and hindering crack propagation at grain boundaries.

Computing the dynamic friction coefficient and evaluation of radiation shielding performance for AISI 304 stainless steel

E. A. Eid et al.

Summary: The study utilized cold rolling deformation to produce different samples of AISI 304 stainless steel with varying martensitic phase content. Hardness improvement depended on the characteristics, growth, and distribution of the martensitic phase, with a decrease in wear rate as the martensite phase increased. Radiation shielding tests showed that AISI 304 stainless steel exhibited good shielding performance against neutrons and gamma-rays compared to previous studies.

In-situ SEM investigation on stress-induced microstructure evolution of austenitic stainless steels subjected to cavitation erosion and cavitation erosion-corrosion

Ye Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of stress on the microstructure evolution of austenitic stainless steels under cavitation erosion and cavitation erosion-corrosion. The findings reveal the differences in stress release and accumulation in different environments, as well as the potential of ductility in austenitic stainless steels to prevent pre-existing pores from initiating cavitation erosion.

Effect of shot peening on surface characterization and cavitation resistance of nickel aluminum bronze

Siqi Zeng et al.

Summary: Nickel aluminum bronze is susceptible to cavitation corrosion in seawater. Shot peening can enhance its cavitation performance through improved surface mechanical strength. Shot peening increases the corrosion current densities, but the samples treated with 40 A intensity exhibit the lowest mass loss and highest surface micro-hardness in cavitation tests.

Summary: The study compared the cavitation erosion behavior of 304 stainless steel in salt water on the rolling surface and longitudinal section, finding that the rolling surface exhibited better resistance to cavitation erosion and improved corrosion resistance and repassivation performance. The morphology evolution and protection capability of passive films on different rolling surfaces were also discussed.

Comparison of cavitation erosion behaviors between the as-cast and friction stir processed Ni-Al bronze in distilled water and artificial seawater

Yang Li et al.

Summary: Friction stir processing (FSP) method was used to improve the properties of as-cast nickel aluminum bronze (NAB) alloy, resulting in finer and more homogeneous microstructure, uniform element distribution, and better mechanical properties. FSP NAB alloys showed lower cumulative cavitation erosion mass loss in different test solutions, indicating improved cavitation erosion resistance. The corrosion effect on cavitation erosion was more significant for FSP NAB alloys compared to the as-cast NAB due to their better pure cavitation erosion resistance.
