Transformation of dissolved organic matter in landfill leachate during a membrane bioreactor treatment

Zhepei Gu et al.

Summary: In this study, a cutting-edge mass spectrometry technique was used to analyze the molecular composition, chemical properties, formation mechanism, and environmental impact of refractory dissolved organic matter (rDOM) in leachate. The results showed that the composition of rDOM varied substantially during the biological treatment of landfill leachate. rDOM had higher unsaturation, aromaticity, oxidation, and molecular weight compared to bioavailable DOM (bDOM). It contained more organic matter with benzene ring and biphenyl structures. The activity of microbes such as Patescibacteria, Chloroflexi, and Proteobacteria contributed to the generation of rDOM through carboxylation, dehydro-oligomerization, and chain scission pathways. The presence of rDOM in the environment can affect the composition and transformation of organic matter, requiring monitoring and special attention.

Hazardous wastes and management strategies of landfill leachates: A comprehensive review

Mohamed T. El-Saadony et al.

Summary: Leachate usually contains toxic pollutants such as organic and inorganic compounds, heavy metals, and contaminants. It is crucial to carefully manage landfill leachate in order to reduce its quantity and prevent contamination. Lack of cost-effective treatment technology and disposal guidelines by municipalities contribute to the ecological and health impacts of leachate in developing countries. This review discusses the classification, composition, production factors, and treatment options for leachate, including aerobic and anaerobic biological treatment and physiochemical management processes.

Progress and prospects in mitigation of landfill leachate pollution: Risk, pollution potential, treatment and challenges

Prabuddhi Wijekoon et al.

Summary: The increasing amount of municipal solid waste ending up in open dumps and landfills results in continuous leachate flow, creating environmental risks. Evaluation through Leachate Pollution Index (LPI) shows high pollution potentials from leachate in most developing countries, mainly due to high organic waste composition and low waste management techniques.

Electrocoagulation as a revived wastewater treatment method-practical approaches: a review

Eirini Magnisali et al.

Summary: This review paper discusses the application of electrocoagulation technology in wastewater treatment, introducing advanced configurations and hybrid methods. Through online data research, the global situation of EC system manufacturers is revealed. Industrial case studies show that the two-stage process of electrocoagulation and electro-oxidation is the most successful combination, while the majority of commercialized EC systems are of small to medium sizes.

A shift from chemical oxygen demand to total organic carbon for stringent industrial wastewater regulations: Utilization of organic matter characteristics

Ji Won Park et al.

Summary: Starting from 2022, South Korea will replace chemical oxygen demand (CODMn) with total organic carbon (TOC) in their industrial wastewater discharge regulations. This shift aims to protect water bodies from organic contaminants, but some industries are struggling to meet the TOC requirements even though they meet the CODMn limits. The study reveals that aliphatic and particulate organic matter in effluents can influence the CODMn/TOC ratio.

Removing refractory organic matter from nanofiltration concentrated landfill leachate by electrooxidation combined with electrocoagulation: Characteristics and implication for leachate management

Xin Sun et al.

Summary: This study optimized the electrochemical treatment of landfill leachate concentrate (LLC) and found that the combination of electrocoagulation (EC) and electrooxidation (EO) yielded the best results. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix coupled with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PALAFAC) successfully identified three fluorescent components in the LLC. EC effectively removed large molecule humic organic matters, while EO simultaneously removed fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA) and promoted the transformation of FA to hydrophilic (HyI). The characteristics of degrading organic matter from LLC were further confirmed using XAD-8 resin separation technology, which helps reduce the treatment load of subsequent EO processes.

Recent Advances in the Reactor Design for Industrial Wastewater Treatment by Electro-Oxidation Process

Jun Liu et al.

Summary: This paper mainly introduces different configurations of electrochemical reactors (ECRs) for the treatment of refractory organic wastewater, and analyzes their advantages and disadvantages. Improved reactors such as 3D-ECR achieve higher mass transfer efficiency by increasing the contact area, and they also have a higher removal rate of organics and lower energy consumption. The future development of ECRs in treating refractory organic wastewater is discussed.

Investigating the effect of Eh and pH on binding forms of Co, Cu, and Pb in wetland sediments from Zambia

Misery Mulele Nabuyanda et al.

Summary: This study investigated the binding forms of cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) in sediment samples from Zambian wetlands receiving mining effluents. The results showed high trace metal contents and the need for remedial actions in certain wetlands. The influence of Eh and pH on binding forms was generally found to be not significant, being overruled by other sedimentological factors.

Variability of leachate quality and polluting potentials in light of leachate pollution index (LPI) - A global perspective

Taher Abunama et al.

Summary: This review comprehensively assesses and characterises leachate quality from waste disposal facilities, landfills and dumpsites located in 61 countries worldwide. Significant differences in leachate quality were found between continents and waste disposal facilities, with a negative correlation between pH and most studied parameters. Based on global leachate data and waste disposal facility age, an LPI rating was identified to classify leachate contamination levels.

Summary: By studying electrocoagulation under different conditions, it was found that satisfactory removal efficiencies can be achieved under specific operational parameters such as iron anode, 2.0 cm inter-electrode distance, and 30 mA/cm2 current density. Electrocoagulation also leads to the formation of fluorescent substances, increasing the biodegradability of wastewater, which facilitates subsequent biological treatment.
