Carbon nanotubes-based adsorbents: Properties, functionalization, interaction mechanisms, and applications in water purification

Muhammad Sajid et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotubes-based adsorbents are widely used for the adsorption of inorganic and organic pollutants from water and wastewater due to their unique properties. Various approaches have been used to modify or functionalize carbon nanotubes for enhanced adsorption, and different mechanisms are involved depending on the adsorption conditions and functionalization. This review provides an overview of the properties, functionalization, and mechanisms of carbon nanotubes-based adsorption, as well as the critical parameters for water purification. It also discusses the challenges and potential solutions associated with carbon nanotubes-based adsorbents.

Heavy metal contamination status in Greek surface waters: A review with application and evaluation of pollution indices

Ioannis Karaouzas et al.

Summary: The overall heavy metal contamination status of surface water bodies in Greece generally meets environmental quality standards, but sediment heavy metal concentrations often exceed guidelines. A few rivers and lakes are moderately to highly contaminated by heavy metals.

Influence of acrylic latex and pre-treated hemp fibers on cement based mortar properties

S. Candamano et al.

Summary: This study investigates a strategy to improve interaction at the fiber-matrix interface and tailor matrix resistance to penetration in hemp fiber-reinforced cement-based mortars. The chemical modification of hemp fibers and matrix modification using an acrylic elastomeric polymer dispersion are effective in improving the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites. The results show that the chemical pre-treatment removes impurities from hemp fibers, providing a cleaner surface and higher thermal stability, resulting in enhanced mechanical performance and crack resistance in the composites.

Compositional heterogeneity of different biochar: Effect of pyrolysis temperature and feedstocks

Shaon Kumar Das et al.

Summary: The study found that the properties of biochar are mainly influenced by feedstock types rather than pyrolytic temperature. With an increase in pyrolysis temperature, the total carbon content and cation exchange capacity of biochar increased, while dissolved organic carbon decreased. By selecting the right feedstock type and standardizing pyrolytic temperature, biochar with different properties can be produced for specific environmental applications.
