Study on Relative Electrical Strength of SF6 Substitute Gas Based on Density Functional Theory

Can Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, the electrical parameters of SF6 substitute gases were calculated using density functional theory, and a prediction simulation equation for their relative electric strength was obtained through fitting. The results show a strong positive correlation between the ionization energy, polarizability, HOMO-LUMO energy level of the substitute gases and their relative electric strength, indicating that HFO-type substitute gases can be used as SF6 substitutes.

Development of computational design for reliable prediction of dielectric strengths of perfluorocarbon compounds

Joonho Jang et al.

Summary: The development of robust computational protocols for accurately predicting the dielectric strengths of eco-friendly insulating gas candidates is crucial. This study employed a series of computational protocols to predict the polarizability, ionization energy, and dielectric strength of perfluorinated carbon-based candidates. The results confirmed the suitability of the B3LYP-based prediction protocol and proposed a novel approach incorporating molecular weight for efficient dielectric strength prediction.

Tailored Design of Electrochemically Degradable Anthraquinone Functionality toward Organic Cathodes

Chae Young Go et al.

Summary: In the study, it was found that the Li-triggered structural collapse observed in the early stage of discharging of anthraquinone with halogenated nitrogen-based functionalities can be attributed to the strong Lewis acid-base interaction of N-Li-X. Furthermore, replacing N and/or X with electron-deficient atoms such as B and/or H can alleviate the repulsive force on the N-X bond, improving the theoretical performance and showing that key parameters cooperatively contribute to the electrochemical redox potential.

Unraveling Three-Stage Discharging Behaviors of Bio-Inspired Organic Cathode Materials

Ku Hyun Jung et al.

Summary: This study systematically designs a large number of DNA/RNA-inspired derivatives and explores their electrochemical redox properties to understand the structure-potential-performance relationship. Four key conclusions are drawn, including the importance of charging energy for determining redox potentials, the cooperative contributions of charging and reorganization energies to discharging potentials, the cathodic inactivity of compounds at the end of discharging, and the critical dependence of charge/energy-storage capability on Li binding mechanism. These findings will contribute to the development of bio-inspired cathode materials for high-performance Li-ion batteries.

Recent Development of Two Alternative Gases to SF6 for High Voltage Electrical Power Applications

John Owens et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the long-standing use of SF6 as a dielectric medium in electrical power applications, and how the industry is transitioning to SF6-free technologies in response to environmental concerns. Alternative gas mixtures containing fluorinated compounds have been developed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly in gas-insulated equipment operating on the grid.
