Selected Aspects of Carbon Stock Assessment in Aboveground Biomass

Vilem Pechanec et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of different input matrix formats on carbon stock values. The results showed that there were noticeable differences between the 1000 m raster format and other formats at the local level, while the differences between various formats were negligible at the regional level.

Ranking the Key Forest Habitats in Ecosystem Function Provision: Case Study from Morava River Basin

Vilem Pechanec et al.

Summary: Floodplain forests are considered important forest ecosystems that provide various ecosystem functions and services. Through assessment, it was found that floodplain forests are highly important and rank well in comparison to other habitats in most studied services. However, when analyzing the rate of ecosystem function provision in relation to the total area of interest, a different order of values is observed.

Tree effects on urban microclimate: Diurnal, seasonal, and climatic temperature differences explained by separating radiation, evapotranspiration, and roughness effects

Naika Meili et al.

Summary: Increasing urban tree cover is a common strategy to mitigate urban heat, as trees can cool cities through evapotranspiration and shading. However, the cooling potential of urban trees varies depending on climate and time of day, with complex interactions between factors such as evapotranspiration, shading, and aerodynamic roughness. Numerical experiments using urban ecohydrological models show that well-watered trees can significantly decrease air temperature, but interactions with factors like wind flow and radiation can influence the overall cooling effect. Urban trees have the potential to improve local microclimates, but their impact is influenced by a combination of factors that need to be carefully considered in urban planning and species selection.

Urban Forests as Main Regulator of the Evaporative Cooling Effect in Cities

Athanasios Paschalis et al.

Summary: The study using remote sensing data found that vegetation type and coverage in the city can have a significant impact on the urban heat island effect, especially daytime urban heat islands are closely related to vegetation characteristics and background climate humidity. Differences in vegetation between urban and rural areas are primarily caused by changes in vegetation types and a decrease in forested areas within the city.
