Latest strategies for rapid and point of care detection of mycotoxins in food: A review

Zhiguang Suo et al.

Summary: Mycotoxins in agricultural products are highly carcinogenic and genotoxic to humans. Traditional laboratory testing methods are being challenged due to their high cost and slow results, necessitating the development of rapid detection methods. This review focuses on the latest strategies, particularly nanomaterial-integrated biosensors, that enable rapid and on-site testing. Several strategies suitable for point of care testing (POCT) of mycotoxins, such as ELISA, LFA, fluorescence, electrochemistry, and colorimetry assay, are summarized. POCT strategies are advancing towards intelligence and portability, especially when combined with smartphones. The integration of biosensors and nanomaterials has significantly improved detection performance.

Recent advances on formation, transformation, occurrence, and analytical strategy of modified mycotoxins in cereals and their products

Hongxia Tan et al.

Summary: Modified mycotoxins in cereals and their products, formed through various processes, can seriously threaten global food safety. The transformation between modified and free mycotoxins during cereal processing can lead to uncertainty in mycotoxin exposure and risk. While there is abundant data on some modified mycotoxins (e.g., modified DON, ZEN, T-2 toxin), information on other modified mycotoxins (e.g., modified OTA and FB1) in cereals is limited. Improved methods are required to detect modified mycotoxins due to their structural changes. This review provides updates on the formation, transformation, occurrence, and analytical strategy of modified mycotoxins, and is significant for enhancing the risk assessment of these toxins.
