Automatic identification of rock discontinuity and stability analysis of tunnel rock blocks using terrestrial laser scanning

Meng Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the integration of terrestrial laser scanning with distinct element method for rock mass characterization and stability analysis in tunnels. It shows that the noncontact detection of blocks using TLS is more labor-saving and has lower safety risks compared with manual surveys. The stability assessment is more reliable as the numerical model built by this method is more consistent with the distribution characteristics of actual joints.

Comparative analysis of deformation and failure mechanisms of underground powerhouses on the left and right banks of Baihetan hydropower station

Anchi Shi et al.

Summary: This study presents a comparative analysis of the deformation and failure characteristics of the surrounding rocks of underground powerhouses on the left and right banks of the Baihetan hydropower station. The results show significant differences in failure characteristics and deformation magnitude between the left and right bank underground powerhouses.

Experimental research on damage characteristics and safety damage threshold of jointed caverns based on acoustic emissions

Wanrong Liu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanical properties, acoustic emission evolution characteristics, and damage characteristics of jointed rock caverns through laboratory tests and theoretical analysis. The study finds that joint position significantly affects the overall bearing capacity of caverns, with damage mainly occurring along the joints and affecting acoustic emission intensity.

Dynamic stability evaluation of underground cavern sidewalls against flexural toppling considering excavation-induced damage

Ang Li et al.

Summary: A novel dynamic method is proposed for evaluating the stability of high sidewalls subjected to flexural-toppling by integrating derived criterion, continuum modelling and microseismic data. The study defines a geo-mechanical model for analyzing toppling rock strata on high sidewalls and deduces potential energies equations using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. A quantitative stability evaluation methodology is presented considering progressive failure and the influence of fractures along bedding planes.

Dynamic Stability Evaluation of Underground Powerhouse Cavern Using Microseismic Monitoring

Vikalp Kumar et al.

Summary: Excavation construction affects the redistribution of stresses around abutment and crown, requiring additional reinforcement for stability. Large underground cavern excavation under adverse geological conditions may lead to rockmass failure. Microseismic monitoring can be used to assess the overall cavern stability by analysing static and dynamic parameters of microseismic data.
