Influence of a temporary stabilization device on respiratory status in patients with severe trauma with a femoral shaft fracture treated by damage control strategy

Camille Maury et al.

Summary: In this retrospective study of severe trauma patients with femoral shaft fractures managed using a DCO strategy, it was found that the use of an ST device was associated with a higher incidence of ARDS and tended to lead to longer ventilation days compared to the use of an EF. The study suggests that, especially for trauma patients at high risk of developing delayed respiratory failure, EF may be preferable to ST in the DCO setting.

Opioid Use After Intensive Care: A Nationwide Cohort Study

Erik von Oelreich et al.

Summary: A retrospective cohort study in Sweden found that approximately 22,138 patients developed chronic opioid use following ICU admission, with opioid consumption peaking after admission and gradually declining over a 24-month follow-up period. Factors associated with chronic opioid use included high age, female sex, presence of comorbidities, preadmission opioid use, and ICU length of stay greater than 2 days. The study also revealed an increased risk of death for chronic opioid users 6-18 months after admission, emphasizing the importance of preventing opioid misuse for improving long-term outcomes after critical care.

Psychotropic and pain medication use in individuals with traumatic brain injury-a Swedish total population cohort study of 240 000 persons

Yasmina Molero et al.

Summary: The study examined medication use in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) compared to controls, finding high rates of psychotropic and pain medication use post-TBI. Results showed significant increases in medication use after TBI, with opioids and non-opioid pain medications seeing the largest increase. Routine medical follow-up and medication review are recommended for individuals with TBI.

Pharmacologic Management of Intensive Care Unit Delirium: Clinical Prescribing Practices and Outcomes in More Than 8500 Patient Encounters

Raiko Blondonnet et al.

Summary: The study described prescribing practices for management of ICU delirium and investigated the independent association of medication choice on key in-hospital outcomes, revealing that most patients received antipsychotic medications, especially haloperidol, olanzapine, and quetiapine. However, these medications were associated with continued delirium and increased risk of in-hospital mortality.
