Calcium carbonate carriers for combined chemo- and radionuclide therapy of metastatic lung cancer

Alexander S. Timin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of combined chemo-and radionuclide therapy using radionuclide carriers and chemotherapeutic drug to treat metastatic lung cancer. The developed core-shell particles effectively load therapeutic radionuclide and accumulate predominantly in lungs. Combination therapy shows superior efficacy in inhibiting tumor growth compared to single therapy.

Calcium carbonate vaterite particles for drug delivery: Advances and challenges

Daria B. Trushina et al.

Summary: The recent success of lipid-based nanoparticles in COVID-19 vaccine delivery highlights the potential of nanoparticle-based technology in targeted drug delivery in biomedicine. Calcium carbonate in its vaterite form is increasingly used as a biocompatible carrier for controlled drug delivery and release due to its porous particles, mechanical stability, biodegradability, sustained release capability, safety profile, and low cost. This review focuses on the recent applications of vaterite particles in the delivery of diagnostics and therapeutic drugs, discussing drug loading factors, methods to increase loading capacity, and administration routes.

Spectroscopic Study of the Release Kinetics of Water-Insoluble Drug Griseofulvin from Vaterite Containers in Aqueous Medium

M. S. Saveleva et al.

Summary: The study optimized the release behavior of griseofulvin (Gf), a water-insoluble antifungal drug, from vaterite carriers using multimodal spectroscopic and microscopic techniques to enhance the accuracy of released Gf determination. Monitoring the carrier degradation process through a combination of scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy demonstrated a good correlation between the obtained data and the payload release kinetics.
