Momentum-Resolved Exciton Coupling and Valley Polarization Dynamics in Monolayer WS2

Alice Kunin et al.

Summary: Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission, the study investigates exciton coupling in monolayer WS2 and finds strong intravalley coupling between the B-1s exciton and A(n>1) states. The measurements indicate that the dominant valley depolarization mechanism conserves the exciton binding energy and momentum, but do not show momentum or energy dependence as expected for the exchange-based mechanism.

Electrical control of hybrid exciton transport in a van der Waals heterostructure

Fedele Tagarelli et al.

Summary: This study reveals the dipole-dependent properties and transport of excitons with different degrees of hybridization by modulating the layer hybridization and interplay between many-body interactions of excitons in a van der Waals heterostructure with an applied vertical electric field. Moreover, it is found that emission quantum yields of the transporting species remain constant as a function of excitation power, with radiative decay mechanisms dominating over nonradiative ones, which is a fundamental requirement for efficient excitonic devices. These findings have crucial implications for studying emerging states of matter and optoelectronic applications based on exciton propagation.

Summary: In this study, heterobilayers composed of single-layer MoS2 and WS2 were investigated using micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The research found that the twist angle has an impact on the electronic band structure, and this conclusion was confirmed by comparing experimental observations with theoretical calculations.

Far-from-Equilibrium Electron-Phonon Interactions in Optically Excited Graphene

Marten Duvel et al.

Summary: This study investigates far-from-equilibrium many-body interactions using photoelectron spectroscopy and finds remarkable transient renormalizations of the quasiparticle self-energy due to non-equilibrium conditions. These observations can be explained by ultrafast scatterings between nonequilibrium electrons and strongly coupled optical phonons.

Structure of the moire exciton captured by imaging its electron and hole

Ouri Karni et al.

Summary: Interlayer excitons, electron-hole pairs bound across atomically thin layered semiconductors, have attracted attention for quantum information applications. In this study, images of the time-resolved and momentum-resolved distribution of both particles were captured in a WSe2/MoS2 heterostructure, providing direct measurements of the interlayer exciton diameter and its localization. The results show that interlayer excitons can be highly localized within small moire unit cells.

Exciton optics, dynamics, and transport in atomically thin semiconductors

Raul Perea-Causin et al.

Summary: This Research Update reviews the recent progress in understanding exciton optics, dynamics, and transport in atomically thin semiconductors, specifically transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers. The impact of hexagonal boron nitride-encapsulation and breakthroughs in exciton-polaritonics are highlighted. Direct observations of exciton formation and thermalization in TMD monolayers and heterostructures, as well as the influence of exciton density, strain, and dielectric environment on exciton diffusion and funneling, are discussed. Relevant research directions for the near future in the field of atomically thin semiconductors are also proposed.

Exciton-driven renormalization of quasiparticle band structure in monolayer MoS2

Yi Lin et al.

Summary: Optical excitation is a powerful tool for controlling the electronic structure of layered van der Waals materials, either through many-body screening effects or light-driven coherence effects. In this study, using extreme-ultraviolet time-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and excitonic many-body theoretical calculations, we directly observed the band renormalization effects driven by excitonic correlations in a monolayer semiconductor. Our findings reveal a new pathway for manipulating the transient energy states in layered quantum materials through optical control of excitonic many-body correlations.

Summary: In this study, the near-surface electronic band structure of Ag(110) was investigated using multidimensional momentum microscopy. The results revealed a wide range of energy-momentum features arising from different optical transitions. The use of multiphoton photoemission allowed for a larger energy-momentum range imaging of surface and bulk bands. The findings have important implications for understanding the optical properties of Ag(110).

Ultrafast Charge-Transfer Dynamics in Twisted MoS2/WSe2 Heterostructures

Jonas E. Zimmermann et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides provide an intriguing platform for creating van der Waals heterojunctions with unique physical properties. Photoexcited electrons and holes can separate through interfacial charge transfer due to their type-II band alignment. The dynamics of ultrafast charge transfer in these heterostructures, influenced by stacking angle, suggest that radiative recombination becomes the dominant decay route.

Visualizing electron localization of WS2/WSe2 moire superlattices in momentum space

Conrad H. Stansbury et al.

Summary: Researchers have reported the first direct evidence of how strongly correlated phases evolve from a weakly interacting regime in a transition metal dichalcogenide superlattice by combining spatially resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with optical spectroscopy. Comparing short and long wave vector moires, they found that the electronic structure evolves into a highly localized regime with increasingly flat bands, renormalized effective mass, and the opening of a large gap in the spectral function accompanied by the splitting of exciton peaks. These results advance our understanding of emerging phases in moire superlattices and highlight the importance of interlayer physics.
