Towards Real-World Quantum Networks: A Review

Shi-Hai Wei et al.

Summary: Quantum networks are crucial for quantum information science, enabling applications in quantum communication, computation, metrology, and fundamental tests. The main challenge lies in distributing entangled flying qubits to separate nodes, where quantum interfaces or transducers map the entanglement onto fixed qubits. Extensive efforts over the past two decades have led to significant progress in entangling quantum nodes and building a global quantum network using various physical systems. This review discusses the development of quantum networks and experimental advancements, comparing the potential and merits of systems such as single atoms, cold atomic ensembles, trapped ions, diamonds with nitrogen-vacancy centers, and solid-state hosts doped with rare-earth ions.

Security bounds for decoy-state quantum key distribution with arbitrary photon-number statistics

Giulio Foletto et al.

Summary: The decoy-state method is a standard enhancement to quantum key distribution protocols, but its theoretical foundation needs further study for new technological advancements. This work provides security bounds for decoy-state QKD using a source with an arbitrary photon emission statistic. The performance of the bounds is evaluated with three statistical distributions - Poisson, thermal, and binomial, showing that they are all viable options for QKD.

Experimentally optimizing QKD rates via nonlocal dispersion compensation

Sebastian Philipp Neumann et al.

Summary: Quantum key distribution (QKD) ensures unconditionally secure communication based on the laws of physics. Recent advancements in technology have made it feasible to bridge longer distances, but fiber-based implementations face limitations due to chromatic dispersion affecting temporal detection precision. A new method utilizing nonlocal dispersion compensation has been proposed and tested, showing significant increase in key rates and potential for overcoming dispersion effects in QKD systems.

Model for optimizing quantum key distribution with continuous-wave pumped entangled-photon sources

Sebastian Philipp Neumann et al.

Summary: Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables unconditionally secure communication based on quantum mechanics laws instead of computational hardness assumptions. Optimizing operation parameters is crucial for achieving high secure key rates in QKD implementations. A model has been developed to accurately describe entanglement-based QKD with continuous-wave pump lasers and calculate optimal tradeoffs for secure key rates.

Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion Sources for Multiphoton Experiments

Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: Entangled photon sources, generated through the SPDC process, are essential for photonic quantum information processing. This review article examines different types of SPDC sources suitable for multiphoton experiments, comparing their performance in terms of indistinguishability, collection efficiency, and brightness. Recent advancements in multiplexed heralded single-photon sources are also discussed, which help mitigate the probabilistic nature of the SPDC process.
