Flagellar motility mediates biofilm formation in Aeromonas dhakensis

Tien-Tien Vicky Lau et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of flagellar genes in the biofilm formation of Aeromonas dhakensis. Results show that mutants lacking certain flagellar genes exhibited reduced swimming, swarming, and biofilm formation. However, complemented strains with these genes restored wild-type levels of motility and biofilm formation. This suggests that these flagellar genes play an important role in biofilm formation through flagella-mediated motility and surface attachment.

The phenotypes and genotypes associated with biofilm formation among methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) isolates collected from a tertiary hospital in Terengganu, Malaysia

Sherry Usun Jones et al.

Summary: This study investigated the in vitro biofilm-forming ability of clinical MSSA isolates from a tertiary referral hospital in Malaysia and detected the presence of biofilm-associated and regulatory genes. The results showed that biofilm formation varied greatly among the MSSA isolates, and the presence of the sasG gene and agr-1 may play important roles in initiating MSSA infections through biofilm formation.

Novel Genes Required for Surface-Associated Motility in Acinetobacter baumannii

Ulrike Blaschke et al.

Summary: Acinetobacter baumannii is a critical priority pathogen for new antibiotic development, and it displays surface motility through twitching and surface-associated mechanisms. Mutated genes involved in biosynthesis, stress metabolism, RNA modification, and competence impact different phenotypes in strain-specific and species-specific ways, highlighting the importance of comparative analysis in studying gene functions and motility mechanisms in A. baumannii.

Characterization of the relationship between polar and lateral flagellar genes in clinical Aeromonas dhakensis: phenotypic, genetic and biochemical analyses

Tien-Tien Vicky Lau et al.

Summary: In this study, flagellar-mediated motility in 46 clinical Aeromonas dhakensis strains was investigated, revealing that all strains demonstrated swimming motility and carried the most prevalent 6 polar flagellar genes. No association was found between biochemical properties and motility phenotypes, but a significant association between swarming and strains isolated from pus was observed.

Molecular Characterization of Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Isolated from the Intensive Care Unit in a Tertiary Teaching Hospital in Malaysia

Jia Jie Woon et al.

Summary: The emergence of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) poses a global health threat, as infections can result in severe clinical complications and high mortality rates. The study focused on molecular characterization of CRAB isolates from ICU patients and identified risk factors associated with patient mortality. OXA carbapenemase gene was found to be predominant, and analysis highlighted the importance of comprehensive infection control measures to prevent the spread of this pathogen.

Summary: Acinetobacter baumannii is a life-threatening pathogen associated with community-acquired and nosocomial infections, mainly pneumonia. The rise in antibiotic-resistant strains reduces effective therapies and increases mortality. Comparative genomic studies have unraveled the innate and acquired virulence factors of A. baumannii.

Importance of twitching and surface-associated motility in the virulence of Acinetobacter baumannii

Jordi Corral et al.

Summary: Acinetobacter baumannii is a clinically significant pathogen with increasing worldwide importance, especially due to its ability to acquire resistance genes. This bacterium can move through two types of motility: twitching and surface-associated, with strain MAR002 exhibiting both. Mutants with altered motility patterns were identified through spontaneous rifampin-resistant mutations in the rpoB gene. Transcriptomic analysis revealed deregulated genes within each motility phenotype, highlighting the key role of surface-associated motility and limited role of twitching in the pathogenicity of A. baumannii strain MAR002.
