Old origin for an European-African amphitropical disjunction pattern: New insights from a case study on wingless darkling beetles

Marcin J. Kaminski et al.

Summary: Research suggests that the origin of the EAAD in Dendarini beetles is ancient and is better explained by the progressive fragmentation of the pan-African rainforest that started in the Early Eocene, alongside increased aridification associated with the global long-term cooling trend at that time. This challenges the understanding of the origin of EAAD patterns, indicating that they do not solely result from recent dispersal events between the Pliocene and Pleistocene.

THE ROLE OF NYCTELIA DORSATA FAIRMAIRE, 1905 (COLEOPTERA: TENEBRIONIDAE) ON LITTER FRAGMENTATION PROCESSES AND SOIL BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLES IN ARID PATAGONIA

German H. Cheli et al.

Summary: Decomposition of organic matter and soil nitrogen cycling are crucial processes for soil fertility. The study found that tenebrionid beetles positively impact soil fertility and nitrogen cycling in arid regions through the fragmentation and consumption of plant litter. These beetles play an important role in the food/energy web from plants to higher trophic levels in the region.

TESTING THE TAXONOMY OF AMPHIDORINI LECONTE (COLEOPTERA: TENEBRIONIDAE): A MOLECULAR PHYLOGENY LEVERAGING MUSEUM SEQUENCING

M. Andrew Johnston et al.

Summary: This study uses molecular phylogenetic analyses to assess the taxonomic issues of the species-rich group of Desert Stink Beetles. The South American genus Nycterinus is excluded from the North American tribe, suggesting a need for reclassification. The large genus Eleodes also requires comprehensive changes in its genus-group classification.

Summary: This study focused on investigating the female terminalia morphology of tok-tok beetles to determine the scope of Sepidiini tribe and establish relationships within the group. Unique features of tok-tokkie terminalia were identified, along with new traits linking phenotypically challenging tribes.

Summary: This study analyzed the neuropeptidomes of two closely related tenebrionid beetles, Tenebrio molitor and Zophobas atratus, providing a basis for further functional studies and the design of environmentally friendly peptidomimetics. The identification of numerous neuropeptides and protein hormones precursors in these beetles will be useful for optimizing production programs and could potentially lead to the development of new biopesticides.

Reevaluation ofBlapimorpha and Opatrinae: addressing a major phylogeny-classification gap in darkling beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Blaptinae)

Marcin J. Kaminski et al.

Summary: The taxonomic concepts of Blapimorpha and Opatrinae among darkling beetles are being tested using molecular phylogenetics and a reassessment of morphology. Results suggest that a monophyletic grouping within Tenebrionidae can be defined by certain morphological features, leading to the resurrection of the subfamily Blaptinae.

Summary: Amino acid substitution models are crucial in phylogenetic analyses, and a new ML method called QMaker has been proposed to estimate a general time-reversible Q matrix from large protein data sets. QMaker combines an efficient ML tree search algorithm, model selection for handling model heterogeneity among alignments, and consideration of rate mixture models among sites.
