Interfacial preparation of multi-branched magneto-plasmonic Fe3O4@Au core@shell nanocomposites as efficient photothermal agents for antibacterial application

Xuelian Lv et al.

Summary: We synthesized multi-branched Fe3O4@Au core@shell nanocomposites through a template-free liquid-liquid interfacial growth reaction. The prepared magneto-plasmonic Fe3O4@Au core@shell nanocomposites exhibited excellent SPR absorption in the NIR region and demonstrated a high photothermal conversion efficiency, making them efficient photothermal agents for antibacterial applications. The results showed that the prepared core@shell nanocomposites could effectively kill bacteria under 980 nm laser irradiation and maintained good photo-stability after multiple photothermal bacteria killing. The development of high efficient antibacterial hybrid nanoparticles could have broad applications in therapy and medical devices.

Towards the Standardization of Photothermal Measurements of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles in Two Biological Windows

Daniel Arranz et al.

Summary: A systematic study on laser-induced heating was conducted on Fe3O4 nanoparticles in water suspension in two biological windows (800 nm and 1053 nm). It was found that the specific absorption rate (SAR) strongly depends on extrinsic parameters such as vessel volume or laser spot size. Utilizing solutions of IRA 980B as a standard probe for SAR measurements and comparing different measurements in different laboratories using the ratio SAR(iron oxide)/SAR(IRA 980B) allows for more accurate evaluation of the heating performance of different nanoparticles.

Role of Dipolar Interactions on the Determination of the Effective Magnetic Anisotropy in Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Pelayo Garcia-Acevedo et al.

Summary: Challenging magnetic hyperthermia (MH) applications require precise determination of magnetic properties in order to maximize heat release. In this study, a mean-field energy barrier model is proposed and used to determine the effective anisotropy constant (K-eff) of a model system of magnetic nanoparticles. The results show that the K-eff values are independent of the specific spacing shell thicknesses and close to bulk magnetite/maghemite values.

Folate decorated dextran-coated magnetic nanoparticles for targeted delivery of ellipticine in cervical cancer cells

Farah Shamil Abdulwahid et al.

Summary: Dextran-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) grafted with foliate (FA) were prepared as a nanocarrier for ellipticine (ET) delivery in cervical cancer. The nanoparticles were synthesized using pulsed laser ablation in liquid method, and the nanosystem was obtained through a reverse microemulsion process. The characterization of the nanoparticles was conducted using dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The cytotoxicity of the SPION@DEX-ET-FA nanosystem on cancer and healthy cells was evaluated using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Flow cytometry assays were performed to assess the induction of apoptosis in Hela cervical cancer cells. The results showed that the SPION@DEX-ET-FA nanosystem exhibited dose-dependent cytotoxic effects on Hela cells, while no adverse effects were observed on healthy cells.
