A review of water pollution arising from agriculture and mining activities in Central Asia: Facts, causes and effects

Yu Liu et al.

Summary: Central Asia is facing severe water shortages and pollution issues, primarily caused by mining and agriculture activities. High concentrations of heavy metals and radionuclides result from mining, while substances like ammonia, nitrogen, and phosphorus are mainly from agriculture. Additionally, soil salinization and salt dust storms exacerbate water pollution in the region.

Rietveld Refinement, μ-Raman, X-ray Photoelectron, and Mossbauer Studies of Metal Oxide-Nanoparticles Growth on Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes and Graphene Oxide

Juan A. Ramos-Guivar et al.

Summary: A modified coprecipitation method was used to prepare maghemite and anatase nanoparticles embedded in graphene oxide and multiwall carbon nanotube frameworks, with detailed structural characterization presented including transmission electron imaging and Raman spectroscopy. Optical density and laser power intensity were found to significantly impact the structure of maghemite nanoparticles, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy provided insights into the functionalization mechanism. Additionally, the temperature dependence of Fe-57 Mossbauer spectra revealed key information about the anisotropy constant and magnetic relaxation of the nanoparticles.

Differentiating Nanomaghemite and Nanomagnetite and Discussing Their Importance in Arsenic and Lead Removal from Contaminated Effluents: A Critical Review

Juan A. Ramos-Guivar et al.

Summary: This review article summarizes the main characteristics of co-precipitation and thermal decomposition methods used to prepare nano-iron-oxides, with co-precipitation being the most promising method for scaling up processes. The differences between nanomagnetite and maghemite based on conventional techniques are highlighted, and recent magnetic nanoadsorbents for arsenic and lead removal are classified based on various physicochemical parameters. The article also discusses regeneration/recycling properties, after-adsorption physicochemical properties, and cost evaluation of these magnetic nanoadsorbents, which are important but less discussed in the literature.
