Using atomic response time to explore the effect of strain rate on yielding behaviors of tensile Cu nanowire with the molecular dynamic method

Yuan-Ching Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of strain rate on the mechanical properties of copper nanowires at the atomic scale using molecular dynamics simulation. The increased yield stress caused by a high strain rate is primarily attributed to the failure of timely nucleation and slippage by dislocation, resulting in the stress being unable to immediately relax through atomic displacement.

Molecular dynamic modelling of the combined influence from strain rate and temperature at tensile loading of nanosized single crystal Cu beams

P. Hansson et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the combined influence of strain rate and temperature on the mechanical response of nanosized, single crystal Cu beams. The study analyzes the effects of strain rate and temperature on the elastic and plastic behaviors, and monitors stress-strain curves and dislocation evolution through 3D molecular dynamic simulations.

Effect of stable stacking fault energy and crystal orientation on fracture behaviour of thin metallic single crystals

Rajwinder Singh et al.

Summary: Understanding the evolution of dislocations and twinning at the crack front is crucial for designing micro-mechanical systems with improved performance. This study shows that the fracture toughness at the crack front in thin pre-cracked FCC single crystals is dependent on material specific properties such as stable stacking fault energy (gamma(ssf)) and crystal orientation, as demonstrated through atomistic simulations. Materials with high gamma(ssf) value tend to form sessile dislocations at the crack front, leading to decreased fracture toughness due to increased plastic flow stress. On the other hand, materials with low gamma(ssf) value exhibit stress-induced twinning and glissile dislocations, resulting in higher fracture toughness. Crystal orientation also plays a significant role in determining the type of dislocations emitted from the crack front, thereby influencing the mode of crack propagation.

Crack Length Effect on the Fracture Behavior of Single-Crystals and Bi-Crystals of Aluminum

Wilmer Velilla-Diaz et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations of cracked nanocrystals of aluminum were conducted to investigate the effects of crack length and grain boundaries. Results showed that the grain boundary had a beneficial effect on fracture resistance, increasing fracture toughness by almost four times for bi-crystals.
