Correlation Between Microbial Community and Hatching Failure in Loggerhead Sea Turtle Caretta caretta

Fanny Claire Capri et al.

Summary: Microbial communities play a crucial role in understanding host ecology and can be used as a tool to enhance species conservation efforts. However, microbial infections can negatively impact host development and viability. This study analyzed and compared the microbial composition of two nests of the widespread marine turtle species Caretta caretta with different hatching success rates from an Italian nesting beach. The results identified dominant bacterial phyla and suggested certain bacterial families as potential causes of hatching failures. Additionally, the study revealed the active role of the nests in shaping the bacterial communities in the sand. These findings highlight the importance of microbiological analysis in monitoring nests and implementing preventive measures to reduce hatching failures.

Bioactive Metabolite Survey of Actinobacteria Showing Plant Growth Promoting Traits to Develop Novel Biofertilizers

Teresa Faddetta et al.

Summary: The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has had negative impacts on the environment and increased the economic burden. This study characterized three actinobacterial strains for their ability to promote plant growth through eco-friendly mechanisms. The strains were found to produce a variety of bioactive molecules, including antibiotics and siderophores, with Streptomyces violaceoruber being the most prolific. In vivo assays on tomato plants showed that seeds treated with these strains exhibited improved germination and growth, particularly with S. violaceoruber cultures. These results highlight the potential of using selected actinobacteria strains to promote sustainable agriculture through the production of bioactive molecules.

Antifouling and antimicrobial activity of Ag, Cu and Fe nanoparticles supported on silica and titania

Carla Calabrese et al.

Summary: The surge in research interest has driven the design of advanced materials with antifouling and antimicrobial properties. Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles show promise as antimicrobial agents due to their high surface-to-volume ratio and nanosized structure. Stabilization of metal nanoparticles on supports like silica and titania can enhance their antimicrobial efficiency by preventing agglomeration, leading to increased biocidal activity.

The effectiveness of newly synthesized quaternary ammonium salts differing in chain length and type of counterion against priority human pathogens

Natalia Kula et al.

Summary: This study investigated the inhibitory effects of a group of nine monomeric quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) on bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. Compounds with a 16-carbon hydrophobic chain showed the most promising results. The anti-adhesion activity of the compounds varied depending on the surface type and strain used. Furthermore, the compounds did not cause hemolysis.

Antifouling Systems Based on Copper and Silver Nanoparticles Supported on Silica, Titania, and Silica/Titania Mixed Oxides

Carla Calabrese et al.

Summary: Silica, titania, and mixed silica-titania powders were used as supports for loading copper and silver, resulting in nanomaterials with antifouling properties. The titania-based coatings showed better adhesion than silica-based coatings and the commercial topcoat.

Multifunctional cationic surfactants with a labile amide linker as efficient antifungal agents-mechanisms of action

E. Paluch et al.

Summary: The research found that the mechanism of perforation of cell membranes commonly associated with surfactants does not apply to cationic dicephalic surfactants, which instead act by increasing cell membrane permeability, leading to lipid droplet aggregation and morphological changes in fungal cells. Additionally, these compounds induce oxidative stress within cells, including increased production of superoxide anion radicals and mitochondrial oxidative stress.
