Dissecting the Interactions between Chlorin e6 and Human Serum Albumin

Alessia Marconi et al.

Summary: Chlorin e6 (Ce6) is a commonly used sensitizer in photodynamic (PDT) and sonodynamic (SDT) therapy. However, its low solubility in water hinders its clinical application. The interaction between Ce6 and human serum albumin (HSA) can improve its water solubility. Simulation experiments identified two binding pockets of Ce6 in HSA, namely the Sudlow I site and the heme binding pocket.

Summary: The persistency of COVID-19 and its variants requires new treatments in addition to vaccines. Computational chemistry suggests that fullerenes and carbon nanomaterials have potential as antiviral agents. This study shows that C-60 has strong binding energy to the main protease of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, M-pro, and may be more effective than the known inhibitor masitinib. The use of C-70 as an innovative scaffold for the inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 M-pro is also proposed.

Chitosan-lactobionic acid-thioctic acid-modified hollow mesoporous silica composite loaded with carborane for boron neutron capture therapy of hepatocellular carcinoma

Taofeng Zhang et al.

Summary: Nanocarriers, such as the chitosan-lactobionic acid-thioctic acid-modified hollow mesoporous silica composite described in this study, have shown promise in developing effective boron-containing delivery agents for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) of refractory tumors. The composite remained stable under physiological conditions, exhibited high selective uptake in liver cancer cells, and effectively released carborane into the tumor tissue in the tumor microenvironment. It demonstrated excellent efficacy in BNCT treatment of liver cancer cells and also exerted antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects to reduce toxic side effects. Additionally, the composite showed high selectivity in accumulating in tumor tissue and could overcome inflammatory responses generated in vivo. Overall, this composite material is a promising candidate for BNCT treatment in hepatocellular carcinoma and has potential in the field of silica-like materials in BNCT.
