A review on TiO2/SnO2 heterostructures as a photocatalyst for the degradation of dyes and organic pollutants

Rekha B. Rajput et al.

Summary: In recent years, industrialization, civilization, and human activities have led to the discharge of organic pollutants into the environment, causing environmental pollution. To address this issue, the heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes technology, which utilizes highly reactive hydroxyl radicals to degrade organic pollutants, has received significant attention. This paper reviews the synergetic effect of TiO2-SnO2 coupled with other semiconductor materials and their performance in photodegradation of toxic contaminants in an aqueous medium. Additionally, various methods for synthesizing TiO2-SnO2 photocatalysts and the impact of different operating factors on the photodegradation of organic pollutants are discussed.

Photoluminescence and photocatalytic activity of rare earth ions doped anatase TiO2 thin films

Eppa Radha et al.

Summary: TiO2 thin films doped with 1% rare earth ions using the sol-gel spin coating technique exhibit tetragonal crystal structure with anatase phase and reduced crystallite size. The films show high refractive indices and narrow band gaps, with characteristic photoluminescence under UV excitations. The doped TiO2 films also demonstrate excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation.

Annealing temperature variation and its influence on the self-cleaning properties of TiO2 thin films

V. T. Lukong et al.

Summary: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an important material with basic and synthetic properties in science and engineering. However, there is a lack of studies on its self-cleaning ability under temperature changes. In this study, TiO2 thin films were prepared using spin coating technique and their self-cleaning ability was evaluated after annealing at different temperatures. The results showed that the thin films annealed at 600 degrees C exhibited the best self-cleaning properties.

Photocatalytic pathway on the degradation of methylene blue from aqueous solutions using magnetite nanoparticles

Thays de Oliveira Guidolin et al.

Summary: Magnetite nanoparticles synthesized by the sol-gel citrate-nitrate method were used for the degradation of methylene blue in a simulated aqueous solution. Experimental design and statistical analysis determined that nanoparticle concentration was the most significant parameter, with the highest concentration experiment achieving the most effective degradation in 210 minutes. Time-depended photodegradation was monitored, showing the excellent performance of the photocatalytic system.

Photocatalytic properties of TiO2-SiO2 sandwich multilayer films prepared by sol-gel dip-coating

Romy Dwipa Y. Away et al.

Summary: TiO2-SiO2 sandwich multilayer films were prepared on sapphire substrates via the sol-gel method, and their structural and photocatalytic properties were investigated. The presence of SiO2 in the sandwich structure increased trap levels and improved photocatalytic activity. Particularly, superior photocatalytic activity was observed when SiO2 was present in the second layer from the surface, allowing holes to react with methylene blue more easily.

Enabling simultaneous redox transformation of toxic chromium(VI) and arsenic(III) in aqueous media-A review

Yu Fu et al.

Summary: The simultaneous conversion of As(III) and Cr(VI) to their less toxic forms is beneficial for the environment and cost-effective. The mechanisms for the oxidation of As(III) and reduction of Cr(VI) through different processes have been explored. Acidity has a positive effect on co-conversion, while the mediated electron transfer process is not significantly affected by dissolved oxygen. Organic compounds may influence the conversion process.
