Novel three-dimensional Ti3C2-MXene embedded zirconium alginate aerogel adsorbent for efficient phosphate removal in water

Langrun Song et al.

Summary: In this study, Ti3C2-MXene embedded Zr-crosslinked SA (MX-ZrSA) beads were synthesized and their phosphate adsorption performance was evaluated. The results showed that Ti3C2-MXene enhanced the thermal stability, mechanical strength, and hydrophilicity of the material, forming loose network-like mesoporous structure. The maximum adsorption capacity was 492.55 mg P/g and was well fitted by Freundlich and optimized Langmuir models. Chemi-sorption involving Zr-O-P and Ti-O-P complexes accounted for high selectivity and affinity to phosphate. The adsorption experiments in real waters and lab-scale continuous flow Anoxic-Anoxic-Oxic reactor demonstrated the potential application of MX-ZrSA beads for phosphate removal. This study provides insight into the synergistic adsorption of aquatic contaminants by MXene and SA aerogel, as well as the removal and recovery of finite phosphorus resource.

Additive-optimized micro-structure in cellulose acetate butyrate-based reverse osmosis membrane for desalination

Jingjing Liu et al.

Summary: An optimization of formulation-induced structure strategy was developed to enhance the performance of cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB)-based reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. The addition of acetone, triethyl phosphate, glycerin and n-propanol resulted in a state-of-the-art salt rejection rate and permeate flux, surpassing previous CAB-based RO membranes. The optimized micro-structure of the membrane provided good separation performance for various concentrations of ions and dyes, as well as resistance to changes in feed pressure.

Porous Lanthanum-Zirconium phosphate with superior adsorption capability of fluorine for water treatment

Dongxue Liu et al.

Summary: Bimetal oxide is commonly used for defluorination, and a novel lanthanum-zirconium phosphate was successfully synthesized using CTAB as a surfactant to remove fluoride from groundwater. The lanthanum-zirconium phosphate showed a high specific surface area and a large pore size, with a maximum fluoride adsorption capacity ten times higher than that of mesostructured zirconium phosphate. The adsorption mechanism of fluoride by the lanthanum-zirconium phosphate was discussed using XPS, NMR, and FTIR analysis. Lanthanum-zirconium phosphate is important not only in the research and development of bimetal oxides but also in the treatment of groundwater for fluoride removal.

Aspartic acid derivative-based MOFs: A promising green material for simultaneous removal of phosphorus and arsenic(V) in contaminated spring water

Qilan Huang et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on amino acids and their derivatives have great potential in wastewater treatment due to their biocompatibility and environmental friendliness. In this study, four MOFs based on aspartic acid derivatives were synthesized and applied for the simultaneous removal of phosphorus and arsenic from wastewater. The results showed that these MOFs exhibited high adsorption capacities for both pollutants in a broad pH range. Additionally, the MOFs could be recycled multiple times and the adsorption behavior was well-described by the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. The mechanism of adsorption involved electrostatic attraction, coordination reaction, and ligand exchange, with the hydroxyl group playing a key role. Overall, the synthesized MOFs based on aspartic acid derivatives are promising eco-friendly materials for the removal of phosphorus and arsenic from complex water bodies.

Adsorption effects and mechanisms of phosphorus by nanosized laponite

Chonghao Jia et al.

Summary: Phosphorus, an important element for crops, can cause environmental problems when lost into water systems. This study evaluated the adsorption ability and molecular mechanisms of a synthetic nanosized clay mineral called laponite in recovering phosphorus from wastewater. Results showed that phosphate adsorbs onto the surface and interlayer of laponite via hydrogen bonding, with greater adsorption energies in the interlayer. These findings provide new insights for the recovery of phosphorus using nano-sized clay and have potential applications in environmental engineering for phosphorus pollution control and sustainable utilization of phosphorus sources.

Phosphate coprecipitation affects reactivity of iron (oxyhydr)oxides towards dissolved iron and sulfide

Peter Kraal et al.

Summary: Iron cycling plays a significant role in controlling the mobility and bioavailability of phosphate in soils and sediments. The fate of phosphate-bearing iron oxides is not well-understood. This study found that coprecipitation of phosphate affected the transformation of iron oxides in the presence of dissolved iron or sulfide, and sulfidation of iron oxides led to the efficient release of phosphate.
