Characterization of Carbon-Black-Based Nanocomposite Mixtures of Varying Dispersion for Improving Stochastic Model Fidelity

Tyler Albright et al.

Summary: This study explores the accuracy of a stochastic fractal aggregate placement algorithm. Nanocomposite thin films with varying dispersion characteristics are created using a high-speed spin-coater and imaged via light microscopy. Statistical analysis is compared to 2D image statistics of stochastically generated RVEs. Correlations between simulation variables and image statistics are examined. Future and current works are discussed.

High-fidelity stochastic modeling of carbon black-based conductive polymer composites for strain and fatigue sensing

Tyler B. Albright et al.

Summary: The research aims to improve stochastic models for predicting electromechanical properties of conductive polymer composite materials with nanoparticle constituents, providing a means to quantify particle dispersion. CPC-based sensors have garnered attention in structural health monitoring, with the study characterizing CPCs composed of carbon black nanoparticles and phenolic-based resin epoxy both experimentally and computationally. A high-fidelity stochastic modeling solution is proposed for estimating electromechanical properties of such CPCs, with qualitative analysis on model fidelity and discussion on potential uses and validation techniques.

Percolation of rigid fractal carbon black aggregates

Fabian Coupette et al.

Summary: We investigate network formation and percolation of carbon black using Monte Carlo simulations and experiments. The percolation threshold shows a quasi-universal relation with the weighted average radius of gyration of the aggregate ensemble. The concentration of large carbon black aggregates has a stronger influence on the percolation threshold than the concentration of small aggregates, while higher order moments of the size distribution do not affect the percolation threshold.

Summary: A new type of conductive polymer composites was developed in this study, where a percolated network was found using oscillatory rheology analysis, with the electrical percolation threshold observed to be higher than the rheological percolation threshold. The four-point probe method proved to be effective in measuring electrical conductivity and predicting the percolation threshold for the composites.
