Abyssal Manganese Nodule Recording of Global Cooling and Tibetan Plateau Uplift Impacts on Asian Aridification

X. D. Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of central Asian aridification on the low latitude North Pacific Ocean based on the analysis of an abyssal manganese nodule. The results reveal two prominent aridification events at approximately 8-7 million years ago and 3.6-0 million years ago, which affected primary productivity and abyssal microbial activity in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. The late Miocene event is suggested to be associated with the uplift of the Northeast Tibetan Plateau rather than global cooling.

Geochemical evidence of Milankovitch cycles in Atlantic Ocean ferromanganese crusts

Pierre Josso et al.

Summary: Hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts are a valuable record of the isotopic composition of seawater affected by continental weathering processes. Studies have shown their response to changes in monsoonal rainfall over West Africa, offering a new approach for calibrating Fe-Mn crust records to astronomical solutions with improved temporal resolution.

Gallium-aluminum systematics of marine hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts: Inter-oceanic differences and fractionation during scavenging

Katharina Schier et al.

Summary: Despite being a critical metal in the EU and the U.S., the geochemical behavior of gallium (Ga) in the Earth's surface environment is still not well understood. Gallium and aluminum (Al) concentrations in marine hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts are not controlled by detrital components, and their geochemical behavior is similar to hydroxide-dominated elements like zirconium (Zr) and hafnium (Hf). The observed fractionation of Ga and Al may be related to the preferential retention of Al compared to Ga on the surface of Fe-Mn (oxyhydr)oxides or stronger organic complexation of dissolved Ga in seawater.

Adsorption of phosphate and cadmium on iron (oxyhydr)oxides: A comparative study on ferrihydrite, goethite, and hematite

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that ferrihydrite has the strongest adsorption capacity for phosphate and cadmium among the three iron (oxyhydr)oxides studied, with synergistic adsorption of phosphate and cadmium observed. The research reveals the adsorption behaviors and mechanisms of different minerals, providing insights for developing surface complexation models.

Speciation of yttrium and the rare earth elements in seawater: Review of a 20-year analytical journey

Johan Schijf et al.

Summary: This paper reviews a long-term program on systematically measuring stability constants for yttrium and rare earth element complexes in seawater, aiming to better understand their speciation in the marine environment. Various analytical approaches were used, with detailed examinations of inorganic and organic ligands complexes.

Growth of ferromanganese crusts on bioturbated soft substrate, Tropic Seamount, northeast Atlantic ocean

Luciana Ortiz Kfouri et al.

Summary: This study investigates the growth of FeMn crusts on soft substrates using various analytical techniques. The results demonstrate that variations in water redox conditions lead to micrometric alternation of vernadite, todorokite, and asbolane. The mineralogy of the FeMn oxides lining bioturbation traces is similar to that of the crusts growing on the soft substrate, suggesting a genetic relationship and probable contemporaneous growth.

A magnetic approach to unravelling the paleoenvironmental significance of nanometer-sized Fe hydroxide in NW Pacific ferromanganese deposits

Xiaodong Jiang et al.

Summary: Ferromanganese deposits are being widely explored for their economic potential and paleoenvironmental archives. A novel approach using thermal treatment can transform nanometer-sized amorphous Fe hydroxides (AFH) into magnetic magnetite, allowing for feasible quantification in Fe-Mn deposits. Investigations in the western Pacific Ocean suggest an increase in AFH abundance at a depth of around 5000 meters, possibly due to bottom-current stratification.

Controls on metal enrichment in ferromanganese crusts: Temporal changes in oceanic metal flux or phosphatisation?

Pierre Josso et al.

Summary: Oceanic hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts are important repositories for metals essential for decarbonisation, with phosphatisation not the primary driving mechanism for metal enrichment and depletion. Changing metal fluxes, rather than secondary mineralisation processes, control the primary metal content in Fe-Mn crust deposits.

Multiple melt source origin of the Line Islands (Pacific Ocean)

Robert Pockalny et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a new model to explain the spatial and temporal history of the Line Islands system by combining plate-tectonic reconstructions, seamount age dates, and available geochemistry. The model identifies a new melt source region at similar to 17 degrees S, similar to 125 degrees W, which contributed to the formation of the Line Islands, Mid-Pacific Mountains, and possibly the Pukapuka Ridge.
