Synergistic effect of organically modified sepiolite clay in intumescent flame retardant polyolefin elastomer-based cable outer sheath compounds

Summary: The synergistic effect of organically modified sepiolite nanoclay (SP) in conjunction with aluminum polyphosphate/pentaerythritol as an intumescent flame retardant (IFR) additive on the polyolefin elastomer/linear low-density polyethylene compound has been studied. The addition of SP nanoclay slightly improved the LOI values and thermal properties of the compounds, while reducing the burning rate and improving the flammability parameters.

The paper concludes with a perspective on the development of these emerging multifunctional nanocomposites and the necessary steps for their wide application in daily life.

Development of Kovacs model for electrical conductivity of carbon nanofiber-polymer systems

Summary: This study develops a model for the electrical conductivity of polymer carbon nanofiber (CNF) nanocomposites (PCNFs) by considering the effects of the CNF, interphase, and tunneling regions as dissimilar zones in the system. Simple equations are used to estimate the resistances of the interphase and tunnels, as well as the volume fraction of CNF and percolation onset. The developed model shows good accordance with experimental data and provides a better understanding of the factors influencing the conductivity of PCNFs.

Polylactic Acid/Polyaniline Nanofibers Subjected to Pre- and Post-Electrospinning Plasma Treatments for Refined Scaffold-Based Nerve Tissue Engineering Applications

Summary: In this study, plasma treatments were applied to PLA and PLA/PAni solutions prior to electrospinning, improving their viscosity and conductivity, and resulting in uniform and well-elongated nanofibers. The nanofibers were further treated with a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) treatment, which significantly increased their surface wettability. The presence of conducting PAni in the scaffolds further promoted the behavior of PC-12 cells, leading to an increase in neurite density.

The Mechanical Properties of Nanocomposites Reinforced with PA6 Electrospun Nanofibers

Dynamic Fracture Resistance under Plane Strain Conditions of High-Density Polyethylene Nanoclay Composites

Summary: Polymer nanoclay composites have significant improvements in mechanical, thermal and barrier properties. However, their effect on dynamic fracture resistance during fast fracture events has not been studied. In this study, the addition of nanoclays to HDPE was found to enhance its rapid crack propagation resistance and improve its properties. The increase in energy consumption and toughening effect of nanoclays prevailed, making it suitable for applications requiring prevention of rapid crack propagation.

1Rapid Hydrolysis of Waste and Scrap PA6 Textiles to ε-Caprolactam

Chitosan-polyethylene oxide/clay-alginate nanofiber hydrogel scaffold for bone tissue engineering: Preparation, physical characterization, and biomimetic mineralization

Summary: This study aimed to prepare a novel organic-mineral nanofiber/hydrogel of chitosan-polyethylene oxide (CS-PEO)/nanoclay-alginate (NC-ALG) and investigate its effects on mineralization and biocompatibility. The scaffolds composed of CS-PEO and NC-ALG were evaluated for their properties and characteristics. The results showed that the incorporation of NC particles in the scaffold enhanced bone-like apatite formation and demonstrated compatibility and safety for osteoblastic cells.

Effects of nanoclay cloisite 20A and alkali treatments on structure-property relationships of bagasse/recycled polypropylene nanocomposites

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of organically modified nanoclay and alkali treatments on the bagasse fiber/recycled polypropylene nanocomposites. The treatments improved the interaction between the fiber and polymer, resulting in enhanced physical properties of the nanocomposites. The addition of nanoclay reduced water ingress and increased the thermal stability of the composites. Overall, the combination of nanoclay and alkali treatments significantly improved the properties of the composites and converted them into high-performance materials.

Spectroscopic Study of Poly Vinyl Alcohol Film Prepared in Different Polar Solvents

Summary: Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a biodegradable, non-toxic, synthetic solvent swollen polymer that can dissolve in polar solvents like water, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Spectroscopic observations show the coexistence of solvent and polymeric matrix even at high temperatures. XRD study reveals a peculiar phase changing phenomenon after 125 degrees C. SEM images of the membrane exhibit a beautiful fish scale like surface morphology. FTIR and Laser Raman spectroscopy confirm the coexistence of solvent and polymer in the membrane.

Summary: Virgin and recycled poly(lactic acid) based nanocomposite materials were prepared by adding organically modified montmorillonite nanoclay, which significantly improved their microwave absorption performance. The presence of nanoclay and the recycling process were found to affect the microstructure, thermal properties, and mechanical performance of the materials. The results showed that mechanically recycled polymer can be a good alternative to virgin polymer for microwave absorber applications.

Characterization of Silver Ions-Doped Organomodified Nanoclays

Summary: In this study, organomodified montmorillonite and halloysite nanoclays were used to enhance intercalation characteristics, and Ag+ ions were doped to enhance antimicrobial properties. Various analyses showed that the interlayer space of the nanoclays increased and Ag+ ions successfully doped into the nanoclay structure. Additionally, MMT-type nanoclay samples released more Ag+ ions compared to halloysite-type nanoclay samples. The results demonstrated that intercalated and Ag+-doped nanoclays effectively inhibited bacterial growth.

Enhancing the physical properties of polystyrene nanofibers by adding multiwall carbon nanotubes and natural dye

Summary: In this study, polymeric nanocomposites of polystyrene nanofibers, multiwall carbon nanotubes, and natural pigment were synthesized using the electrospinning technique. The results showed that the addition of multiwall carbon nanotubes and natural pigment increased the viscosity and surface tension of the solutions. The physical interaction between the components was confirmed through various tests. The addition of multiwall carbon nanotubes and natural pigment resulted in smoother fibers with fewer bead formations. An increase in the amount of multiwall carbon nanotubes made the samples more hydrophobic. Additionally, the Tauc plot showed that the electrical sensitivity of the prepared samples increased with the addition of multiwall carbon nanotubes and natural pigment.

Summary: We fabricated thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) polyamide membrane for the treatment of brine solutions. Different surfactant-modified nanoclay (montmorillonite, MMT) were embedded separately into polyamide layer through interfacial polymerization between piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC). The results showed that DDAB surfactant had the most significant effect on membrane performance, resulting in the most uniformly dispersed nanoclays on the membrane surface, as well as higher pure water flux and fouling resistance.
