Bioremediation Potential of Native Bacillus sp. Strains as a Sustainable Strategy for Cadmium Accumulation of Theobroma cacao in Amazonas Region

Marielita Arce-Inga et al.

Summary: The study found that the use of cadmium removal bacteria can be a sustainable alternative to address cadmium accumulation in cacao plants. Three hypertolerant bacteria from cacao rhizosphere were identified, belonging to Bacillus and Pseudomonas genera. However, these bacteria showed highly variable outcomes in terms of their impact on stem cadmium accumulation.

Tolerance and Cadmium (Cd) Immobilization by Native Bacteria Isolated in Cocoa Soils with Increased Metal Content

Pedro F. Feria-Caceres et al.

Summary: In this study, twelve cadmium-tolerant bacteria were isolated from soils of cocoa farms in the Colombian Andes and their ability to tolerate and immobilize cadmium was tested. The results showed that these bacteria could deform their cell morphologies and interact with cadmium through biosorption and bioaccumulation. In addition, the presence of certain bacterial strains could prevent the increase of cadmium concentration in roots, indicating a potential for cadmium immobilization in soil.
