Summary: Detection of low-temperature heat treatment in ruby and sapphire can be challenging. This study examined the effects of heat treatment on Burmese ruby samples and found that different solid inclusions had varying sensitivities to heat treatment. Microscopic examination and Raman analysis were useful in detecting and analyzing heat treatment.

Raman spectroscopic investigation of zircon in gem-quality sapphire: Application in origin determination

Summary: By comparing the Raman features of zircon inclusions in sapphires from different origins, it is possible to distinguish between younger sapphires (such as those from Kashmir and Myanmar) and older sapphires (such as those from Sri Lanka and Madagascar). This study demonstrates the potential of using non-destructive methods to distinguish the origin of sapphires based on zircon inclusions, which could benefit the commercial gem trade.
