Paleoenvironment reconstruction of the Middle Ordovician thick carbonate from western Ordos Basin, China

Jia-Qi Yang et al.

Summary: Reconstructing paleoenvironments is crucial for understanding the development and evolution of carbonate reservoirs. The Middle Ordovician Period is significant for its greenhouse conditions and biological evolution. By analyzing the carbonate rocks in the Dingbei area of the Ordos Basin, the paleoenvironment was reconstructed, revealing high seawater paleotemperature, suboxic-anoxic paleoredox conditions, and high seawater paleosalinity. The presence of planktonic organisms led to an increase in total organic carbon, providing a supplementary source for natural gas. The dissolution of gypsum and its residual presence further contributed to the preservation of natural gas. This study provides valuable data and a theoretical basis for natural gas exploration.

Differentiating between hydrothermal and diagenetic carbonate using rare earth element and yttrium (REE plus Y) geochemistry: a case study from the Paleoproterozoic George Fisher massive sulfide Zn deposit, Mount Isa, Australia

Philip Rieger et al.

Summary: Carbonate minerals are common in sediment-hosted mineral deposits and their REE+Y-CN composition can provide insights into fluid chemistry and fluid-rock interactions. The differentiation of pre-ore and hydrothermal carbonates using in situ REE+Y data remains relatively untested. This study confirms that in situ REE+Y data can be used to distinguish between pre-ore and hydrothermal carbonates, providing important constraints on ore formation conditions.

The moldic pore evolution of the Middle Ordovician sabkha dolostone in Ordos Basin, China: A study based on the petrographic and geochemical characteristics of pore fillings

Qingqing Luo et al.

Summary: In the Ordos Basin, the sabkha dolostone reservoir with moldic pores of the fifth Member in the Middle Ordovician Majiagou Formation (M5) dominated the gas production of the Lower Palaeozoic. Recent research studies revealed the complex history of the moldic pore evolution, which intensively affected the reservoir potential evaluation.

Carbon, oxygen and strontium isotopic and elemental characteristics of the Cambrian Longwangmiao Formation in South China: Paleoenvironmental significance and implications for carbon isotope excursions

Pengyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study provides detailed geochemical research on the Longwangmiao Formation in the central Sichuan Basin of South China, revealing the paleoenvironmental changes and the origin of carbon isotope excursion events during this period. The results indicate that continental weathering is climatically controlled and was influenced by local karst formation and regional regressions during transgressions. The study also highlights the warm and humid paleoenvironment during the early Toyonian, gradually transitioning to colder and drier conditions in the middle Toyonian.

Marine anoxia linked to abrupt global warming during Earth's penultimate icehouse

Jitao Chen et al.

Summary: Understanding the carbon perturbation events and their effects on the Earth system is crucial for studying how the Earth responds to abrupt warming. This study investigates an abrupt carbon perturbation and global warming event that occurred during a paleo-glacial state using an integrated proxy and modeling approach. The results show significant isotopic excursions coinciding with a doubling of atmospheric CO2 partial pressure and a biodiversity nadir. Earth system modeling suggests that widespread anoxic conditions during this global warming event can be attributed to enhanced thermocline stratification and increased nutrient fluxes.

Fault-controlled hydrothermal dolomitization of Middle Permian in southeastern Sichuan Basin, SW China, and its temporal relationship with the Emeishan Large Igneous Province: New insights from multi-geochemical proxies and carbonate U-Pb dating

Tianbo Yang et al.

Summary: The mechanism of fault-controlled hydrothermal dolomitization in the southeastern Sichuan Basin is studied using petrographic, geochemical, and chronological data. The results indicate a temporal relationship between the dolomitization and the Emeishan Large Igneous Province. This study provides insights into the dolomitization process and regional tectonic activities.

Summary: By studying two types of dolomite reservoirs in the Ordos Basin, we found that different diagenetic processes and fillings led to changes in reservoir porosity, which is of great significance for the restoration of porosity evolution in other basins or series of strata.

Marine carbonate reservoirs formed in evaporite sequences in sedimentary basins: A review and new model of epeiric basin-scale moldic reservoirs

Di Xiao et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the major genetic environments of evaporite-carbonate assemblages and proposes a new type of reservoir called epeiric basin-scale moldic reservoirs. This rare end-member sedimentary assemblage formed in a unique environment controlled by high atmospheric CO2 content, sea-level fluctuations, and evaporative conditions during the Middle Ordovician greenhouse, providing reservoirs with high exploration potential.

Miocene paleoceanographic evolution of the Mediterranean area and carbonate production changes: A review

Irene Cornacchia et al.

Summary: Miocene is a crucial period for the global climate evolution and the geodynamic evolution of the Mediterranean basin, with global and regional factors controlling Miocene Mediterranean oceanography. Changes in Mediterranean shallow-water carbonate production were influenced by oceanographic conditions. The evolution in the Mediterranean from the early Miocene to the early Messinian was affected by factors such as regional tectonics, volcanism, and Indo-Pacific closure, impacting the composition of carbonate production and the development of coral reefs and other carbonate structures.

Geochemistry of carbonate rocks of the Chilpi Group, Bastar Craton, India: Implications on ocean paleoredox conditions at the late Paleoproterozoic Era

Prasanta Kumar Mishra et al.

Summary: The chemogenic sediments of the Chilpi Group in the Bastar Craton have been analyzed for sedimentary environment, geochemistry, and redox evaluation of seawater towards the end of the Paleoproterozoic Era. The presence of reducing conditions in the shallow sea towards the late Paleoproterozoic Era indicates a suboxic to anoxic environment, unaffected by the Great Oxidation Event. The evaluation of multielement concentration suggests minimal effects of detrital contamination, diagenesis, metamorphism, and hydrothermal contributions, with a preservation of pristine marine nature of the carbonates.

Volcanic events-related hydrothermal dolomitisation and silicification controlled by intra-cratonic strike-slip fault systems: Insights from the northern slope of the Tazhong Uplift, Tarim Basin, China

Duan Wei et al.

Summary: This article investigates the effects of hydrothermal fluids related to multiple tectonic-thermal events on Ordovician carbonate rocks on the northern slope of the Tazhong Uplift in the Tarim Basin. It suggests that magma-sourced hydrothermal fluids and deep-seated ultramafic-derived hydrothermal fluids may have played a key role in the silicification and dolomitisation processes. The strike-slip fault systems appear to have served as conduits for the transport of these fluids, contributing to the formation of hydrothermal dolomites and cherts.

Tectonic evolution and controls on natural gas generation and accumulation in the Ordovician system of the Ordos Basin, North China

Peng Yang et al.

Summary: The Ordovician strata in the Ordos Basin contain high organic matter content and have reached the dry gas stage of thermal evolution, facilitating natural gas generation. Karst type residuums have formed in the central and northeastern parts of the basin, and an Early Cretaceous tectono-thermal event controlled the generation and accumulation of natural gas.

Constraining fluid-rock interactions during eogenetic karst and their impacts on carbonate reservoirs: Insights from reactive transport modeling

Ying Xiong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dissolution of carbonate rocks and the factors influencing it through reactive transport modeling. Results showed that exposure time and rainfall greatly affect karst depth and porosity increment, while calcite dissolution is influenced by temperature, Ca2+, and HCO(3) concentration. Atmospheric pCO(2) has a minor impact on karst depth but increases dissolution rate under high pCO(2) conditions.
