Big Data as a Tool for Building a Predictive Model of Mill Roll Wear

Natalia Vasilyeva et al.

Summary: Big data analysis has become a daily task for companies worldwide, with the challenge of extracting knowledge and value from large amounts of data faced by all striving for competitiveness. This study developed a predictive model for mill roll wear based on operational control data, finding that the dimensions and grades of rolled steel sheets, as well as the material of the rolls, have the greatest influence on wear. The gradient boosting algorithm was identified as the preferred model due to its high accuracy compared to the random forest algorithm. Control data showed a tendency to underestimate predicted values in the random forest model, while the gradient boosting model showed symmetrical predictions.

Optimization of CVC shifting mode for hot strip mill based on the proposed LightGBM prediction model of roll shifting

Guangtao Li et al.

Summary: A new random shifting mode for CVC work rolls has been developed to disperse roll shifting positions and maintain good strip shape by randomly changing bending force within limits. The Light Gradient Boosting Machine algorithm is applied to accurately express the relationship between shifting position and bending force, and Bayesian optimization is recommended for optimizing the prediction models. The proposed CVC shifting mode has been successfully implemented offline in a hot rolling line, demonstrating effective control of strip shape.
