Effect of WC nanoparticles on the thermal stability and mechanical performance of dispersion-reinforced Cu composites

Lu Han et al.

Summary: WC dispersion-reinforced Cu composites with high thermal stability were successfully fabricated using intermittent electrodeposition and spark plasma sintering. The WC nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in the Cu matrix, impeding grain boundary migration and increasing the grain-growth activation energy. The composite exhibited significantly increased yield strength at high temperatures, making it suitable for use as a heat sink.

Copper-based alloys for structural high-heat-flux applications: a review of development, properties, and performance of Cu-rich Cu-Cr-Nb alloys

Robert P. Minneci et al.

Summary: This review discusses the development and current state of Cu-rich Cu-Cr-Nb alloys, specifically focusing on GRCop-84 and GRCop-42. Recent advancements in additive manufacturing have boosted interest in GRCop alloys, with full-scale hardware and hot-fire tests being conducted, but further research on structure-property relationships is needed. Comparisons to other high-heat-flux Cu alloys are made, and future prospects and advantages provided by additive manufacturing for GRCop alloys are assessed.

Understanding creep mechanisms of a Cu-Cr-Nb alloy by testing under constant structure conditions

M. Zhang et al.

Summary: The stress reduction creep tests on a Cu-Cr-Nb alloy at 923 K revealed local dislocation climb as the rate-controlling deformation mechanism, with an activation energy consistent with self-diffusion in the Cu matrix. An internal back stress of approximately -9 MPa was found to act on the rate-controlling dislocations, believed to be the sum of interaction between dislocations and particles, as well as dislocations themselves. However, this back stress does not lead to a true threshold in thermally activated dislocation motion.

Investigation of the evolution of Geometrically Necessary Dislocation (GND) tensor in a type 316 steel by using in-situ EBSD technique

Xiao Wang et al.

Summary: This study reveals a significant increase of GND tensor in 316 austenitic steel at the plastic stage, with the largest rise occurring at the early stage and the biggest increase of zero-value point happening later. This suggests that the rapid accumulation of GND density may be a precursor to defects formation or material degradation. The GND tensors can therefore be used for degradation analysis of 316 steel.

Fabrication and mechanical properties of WC nanoparticle dispersion-strengthened copper

Lu Han et al.

Summary: The CDS-Cu composites prepared through spark plasma sintering (SPS) overcame the aggregation problem of tungsten carbide (WC) nanoparticles, thereby improving the interface bonding strength and load transfer efficiency. The main strengthening mechanisms induced by dispersed nano-WC particles are Orowan strengthening and grain refinement strengthening.
