A novel dual-functional layer exhibiting exceptional protection and photocatalytic activity by organic functionalization of plasma electrolyzed layer

Mosab Kaseem et al.

Summary: The formation of inorganic-organic hybrids (IOH) on metallic substrates plays a crucial role in improving their structural and functional features. In this study, an organic coating (OC) consisting of coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (3-CCA) and albumin (ALB) was grown on an inorganic layer (IC) produced by plasma electrolysis of AZ31 Mg alloy. The synergistic actions between OC and IC resulted in the formation of a flake-like structure that sealed the structural defects of IC and provided chemical protection and photocatalytic performance.

Improving the electrochemical stability of AZ31 Mg alloy in a 3.5wt.% NaCl solution via the surface functionalization of plasma electrolytic oxidation coating

Mosab Kaseem et al.

Summary: The unique interactions between HA and ALB molecules on the surface of the porous layer of AZ31 Mg alloy were utilized to fabricate a novel hybrid composite film with excellent electrochemical stability. The interaction between ALB and HA molecules can effectively reduce the exposed area to corrosive species, protecting the substrate from corrosion. The porous structure of the IL facilitates the formation of physical and chemical locking, leading to the heterogeneous nucleation and crystal growth of the organic layer.

Surface characterization of bioceramic coatings on Zr and its alloys using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO): A review

Arash Fattah-alhosseini et al.

Summary: Zirconium and its alloys are widely used in orthopedic, dental, and hard tissue implants due to their high biocompatibility and corrosion resistance, but surface modification is essential for durable medical applications. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) can produce a uniform, thick, hard, and sticky oxide coating on the surface of zirconium, allowing for controlled coating properties to enhance bioactive and biocompatibility behavior.
