Study on Cutting Force and Tool Wear in Machining of Die Materials with Textured PCD Tools Under Ultrasonic Elliptical Vibration

Sangjin Maeng et al.

Summary: Machining of steel-based alloy and tungsten carbide is challenging due to their hardness. Texturing on the rake face of the tool and ultrasonic elliptical vibration cutting (UEVC) can prolong tool life by reducing wear. This study investigates the cutting performance and tool wear in machining die materials with textured polycrystalline diamond tools under UEVC. The experiments show that UEVC reduces cutting force and improves tool life.

Extenuating Chatter Vibration in Milling Process Using a New Ensemble Approach

Rohit Mishra et al.

Summary: A novel methodology based on Spline-Based Local Mean Decomposition (SB-LMD) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is proposed to ascertain the stability regimes in milling. Audio signals acquired during milling operation are processed using SB-LMD technique to extract tool chatter features. Different training algorithms and activation functions are used to train the data set, and the most suitable combination is selected to develop a prediction model of chatter severity. The results show that the proposed methodology is effective in predicting chatter severity and improving productivity and surface finish in milling.

Finite Element Modeling and Experimental Validation of Tool Wear in Hot-Ultrasonic-Assisted Turning of Nimonic 90

Jay Airao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the combined effects of ultrasonic-assisted turning (UAT) and pre-heating of the workpiece on the machinability of difficult-to-cut materials using finite element analysis. The results suggest that hot-UAT and UAT can significantly reduce tool wear at low cutting speeds, while at high cutting speeds, tool wear increases substantially in all three types of turning operations.

Finite-amplitude stability in regenerative chatter: The effect of process damping nonlinearity and intermittent cutting in turning

Yaser Mohammadi et al.

Summary: The damping forces at the tool and workpiece interface greatly impact the dynamics of regenerative chatter in machining. In addition to the stability against chatter at low cutting speeds, the nonlinearity of process damping significantly affects the post-chatter dynamics. This study develops bifurcation diagrams to determine the relationship between machining parameters and the amplitude of resulting limit cycles, uncovering the nature of limit cycle bifurcations and the dynamic forces in the process.

Finite-amplitude stability in regenerative chatter: The effect of process damping nonlinearity and intermittent cutting in turning

Yaser Mohammadi et al.

Summary: Process damping significantly influences the stability of low-speed cutting and the dynamics of regenerative chatter. Under large amplitudes, process damping nonlinearity creates stable limit cycles, which subsequently lose stability through subcritical non-smooth fold bifurcation.

Improving optimal chatter control of slender cutting tool through more accurate tuned mass damper modeling

Min Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates an improved technique for optimizing chatter control through a more accurate modeling method, viewing the cutting tool as a cantilever Euler-Bernoulli beam and the TMD as a two degrees of freedom system including translation and rotation vibrations. The study analyzes the effects of TMD position and length on the optimal design parameters of two spring-damping elements through a series of optimizations. The results show significant differences in the chatter control mechanism of the two elements, emphasizing the importance of selecting appropriate stiffness and damping parameters for optimal performance of the TMD in slender cutting tools.
