SiC/graphene reinforced aluminum metal matrix composites prepared by powder metallurgy: A review

Kishor Kumar Sadhu et al.

Summary: The demand for lightweight structural and engine materials in automobile and aerospace applications has led to the development of aluminum-based composite materials, which have properties such as high strength, stiffness, and low density. The incorporation of SiC and graphene particles has been studied to improve the properties of aluminum metal matrix composites. The reinforcement mechanisms provided by SiC and graphene have shown significant improvements in thermal and mechanical properties.

Compressive behavior of CNT-reinforced aluminum matrix composites under various strain rates and temperatures

Minjie Wang et al.

Summary: The study showed that the strengthening capability of CNTs/Al decreased compared to PBM Al with increasing temperature and decreasing loading rate. However, CNTs played a crucial role in hindering dislocation movement and stabilizing the microstructure, leading to increased strength in Al-based MMCs. Experimental results also revealed improved strain rate sensitivity and reduced activation volume in CNTs-reinforced Al composites compared to pure aluminum.

Manufacturing of coarse and ultrafine-grained aluminum matrix composites reinforced with Al2O3 nanoparticles via friction stir processing

Marta Orlowska et al.

Summary: Nanocomposites consisting of coarse grained and ultrafine-grained aluminum matrix reinforced by Al2O3 nanoparticles were manufactured using friction stir processing (FSP). The study found that the addition of nanoparticles preserved high mechanical properties in the ultrafine-grained material, with a slight decrease in tensile strength and an increase in elongation to break.

Recent progress in graphene-reinforced aluminum matrix composites

Jinlong Su et al.

Summary: There is a growing interest in graphene-reinforced aluminum matrix composites (GRAMCs) due to the potential benefits it offers such as high strength, unique self-lubricating property, and high thermal and electrical conductivity. Studies have shown that adding graphene into aluminum or aluminum alloy can enhance the mechanical and physical properties of the material. This review traces the recent development of GRAMCs, covering fabrication methods, properties, and challenges faced by this type of composite material.

Mechanical properties of aluminium-graphene/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) metal matrix composites: Advancement, opportunities and perspective

Virat Khanna et al.

Summary: The rapid development of the mechanical industry requires new and reliable materials, with Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) being one of the prominent candidates. Carbon nanostructures, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), are found to be excellent support reinforcement materials in MMCs. The study evaluates the impact of graphene/CNTs reinforcement in aluminum for improvement in mechanical properties, as well as reviewing different processing methods.
